THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

Senator Sees Jews
Living In A Golden Age

DAVID HOLZEL

Staff Writer

"Let your conscience be your
guide," was Sen. Howard Met-
zenbaum's message to the Al-
lied Jewish Campaign leader-
ship Sunday, at the AJC'S
1987 Campaign Kickoff for
Campaign Leadership. Nearly
200 people attended the
three-hour session at the
Maple/Drake Jewish Commu-
nity Center which featured
workshops as well as Metzen-
baum's keynote address.
Calling the present the
"Golden Age of the Jewish
community," with American
Jews, "strong, affluent, rich in
culture," Metzenbaum (D-
Ohio) said it was time to "take
stock of where we are, what our
position is as American Jews."
He contrasted the swelling
numbers of American Jews in
government, law, business,
music and the news media, the
many Jewish recipients of the
Nobel and Pulitzer prizes with
the low points of Jewish his-
tory: the Crusades, the Inquisi-
tion and the Holocaust.
"If history teaches us any-
thing," the senator told his
audience, "it is that we cannot
take our rights and privileges
for granted.
"We cannot forget the unbe-
lievable thing that happened
in Turkey," he went on, refer-

ring to the recent terror attack
on an Istanbul synagogue. Re-
counting the long list of similar
attacks on Jews in recent
years, he concluded by asking,
"Can the day be far distant
when more of the same hap-
pens in this country?"

Calling Israel "critically im-
portant to America's security,"
Metzenbaum observed that
"we stand extremely proud be-
cause of a little country in the
Middle East."
The Reagan Administra-
tion's policy towards "moved in
the right direction after a
shaky start," according to Met-
zenbaum. He recalled the ugli-
ness of the AWACs debate. "I
Challenge anyone to shoe me a
scintilla of evidence that Saudi
Arabia has done anything to
advance the peace process."
Despite the current calm
seas in U.S.-Israel relations,
the Senator warned "those who
are complacent about the Ad-
ministration's policy towards
Israel," recalling the "bad old
days" when Secretary of De-
fense Caspar Weinberger
commended the U.S. Marine in
Lebanon who pulled a weapon
on an Israeli tank commander,
and when Weinberger refused
to let marines, injured in the
truck bombing at Beirut Air-
port, be treated in Israel.
Metzenbaum pointed to
threats at home from the Lyn-
