cessfully worked to bring
Jewish groups into interfaith
coalitions in Ann Arbor. As
outreach coordinator of the
Near East Studies Center of
the University of Michigan,
she has aided Jewish groups in
using the resources of the cen-
ter and has arranged for Is-
raelis to speak on campus. In
Ann Arbor, she is equally
known for her criticisms of
Palestinian terrorism and var-
ious Arab and Palestinian
polities and actions as she is for
her criticisms of various Israeli
and US policies. Her fairness,
moral integrity, and commit-
ment to peace and social justice
are, for me, beyond question.
The baseless attack upon
Barlow ill-serves the Jewish
community which must deal
with the moral and religious
problems of the political situa-
tion in Israel and the Middle
East. We cannot do this when
we refuse to recognize un-
pleasant truths about Israeli
policies and their conse-
quences and we cannot do this
by lashing out anikrily at any-
body and everybody who dis-
agrees with official positions_
taken by the Israeli govern-
ment. As I so often stressed
when I worked in Jewish edu-
cation, there is a big difference
between ahavat Israel (love of
the land and people of Israel)
and support of transient
policies of the government of
the State of Israel. Betsy Bar-
low, a Christian speaking on a
radio program normally hosted
by the Episcopal Bishop H.
Coleman McGehee, displayed
the former; Kushner, speaking
in the name of the Jewish
community, displayed only the
latter .. .

I find myself unable to share
your view on apartheid ("Apar-
theid Action," Sept. 5). I think
it ill-conceived and, under cer-
tain circumstances, even mis-
chievous. Your reliance on
public support does not rein-
force your judgment; they, too,
may be wrong. Even the truly
magnificent Elie Wiesel may
also be magnificently wrong. It
is believed he was mistaken be-
fore, when acceding to accept-
ing from President Reagan the
Congressional Gold Medal of
Honor; it was obviously in-
tended to get a heter from him
for the Bitburg venture to ac-
cord post mortem status to the
dead German Nazi murderers,
who, with vicious abandon,
took the lives of our martyrs,
millions of helpless and de-
fenseless men, women and lit-
tle children. Some hold that
Wiesel should have declined
the honor.
