Sidurim, the works edited by
Mesorah editorial scholars for
the Holy Days have the merit
both of completeness and excel-
lent English translations.
The editors of the newly pub-
lished volumes correctly indi-
cated that "surely there is no
time of the year when a Jew
wishes to gain a deeper under-
standing of the words and sig-
nificance of his prayers than
during the Days of Awe."
Many regulations and
Jewish traditional laws are de-
fined in these Machzorim. The
Yom Kippur text is replete
with explanations, among the
many other obligations, of the
Kol Nidre pledges and the con-
sidered annulments. The most
authoritative rabbis of all
times provide understanding
of the Kol Nidre plea for an-
nulment. There is emphasis
that when a pledge is made in-
sincerely it can not be annul-
led.
Many of the Mesorah publi-
cations earn appreciation and
utilization. There is, for exam-
ple, the History of the Jewish
People from Yavneh to Pum-
padisa by Meyir Holder and
contributing editor Rabbi
Hersh Goldwurm. It covers
nine centuries of Jewish his-
tory from the destruction of the
Second Temple to the end of the
Gaonic period. Students of
Jewish history must not ignore
this important volume.

Leonard N. Simons has been
honored endlessly . . . de-
servedly. His accomplishments
in his professional career as an
advertising expert keep earn-
ing him national acclaim. In
the half-century of American
Jewry's maturing, his name is
inerasable in leadership in
every functioning movement,
on the home front and on a
worldwide Jewish scape.
He has acquired recognition
as a master toastmaster and
the stories he relates are an ac-
cumulation of humor in his
masterfully assembled essays,
the history-primer Simons
Says. That's where, in typical
Jewish style, he referes to him-
self, in self-subjugation, in his
self-portrayal as the philan-
thropic "Macher" and "Schnor-
rer."
Dr. Simons was just awarded
another honorary doctorate by
a local college. Marygrove
chose to honor him for his very
many services to Detroit and
Michigan, to world Jewry — to
mankind. John E. Shay,
Marygrove president, present-
ing the citation to the honoree,
proved that he had read Simon
Says very carefully. He caught
the spirit of the "Macher" and
absorbed all the Simons at-
tainments. The "Goy Shay"
wrote a summary of Simons'
record of many services that in
many respects emphasizes a
life with echoes of the noblest
in two generations' experience.
It is a meritorious citation in
Leonard Simons
which "Goy" John E. Shay thus
described "Macher" Simons:
Leonard Simons:
Successful Businessman,
Fund-Raiser, Bibliophile,
Raconteur, Historian, Oc-
togenarian, Macher. We
honor your lifetime of
achievement and your dedi-
cation to understanding
among Detroit's diverse
religions, racial ethnic
communities.
In recognition of your
success as the founding
partner of one of Detroit's
leading advertising agen-
cies;
In gratitude for your self-
less donation of time, talent,
and financial support for
nearly every form of charit-
able activity in the Detroit
area including, but cer-
tainly not limited to: The De-
troit Institute of Arts, The
Jewish Welfare Federation,
The Michigan Cancer
Foundation, The United
Negro College Fund and, of
course, Marygrove College;
In admiration of your zeal
as an assiduous collector of
books, and founding cham-
pion of the Wayne State
University Press;
In appreciation of your
remarkable wit, which you
have used so charmingly to
enliven countless testimo-
nial dinners as toastmaster
extraordinaire;
In recognition of your
scholarship as a Detroit his-
torian, your service on the
Board of the Detroit Histor-
ical Society, and as a found-
ing member and President
of the Detroit Historical
Commission;
In amazement over your
continued vitality, highligh-
ted by producing a 335-page
book on the occasion of
your eightieth birthday,
featuring selections of writ-
ings and talks from your
lifetime in Detroit;
Marygrove College is
today proud to claim you as
an alumnus and to confer
with honor and privilege the
honorary degree of "Doctor
of Humane Letters" on
Leonard Norman Simons,
May 18, 1986.
