Bryant, who is not married,
paints usually in her at-home
studio, sometimes into the wee
hours — finding it constantly
challenging to set aside
enough time to get as much ac-
complished as she'd like to.
"When I was in Israel, I got a
lot done," she says. "But that
was because I just let every-

thing else go, except my work. I
mean, it got to the point where
I knew nobody else would have
wanted to live that way.
"I'd just watch the coc-
kroaches grow because I didn't
have the time to spray — be-
cause I didn't have the time to
take the dishes out of the cup-
boards. And you can't very well
spray on the dishes and the
food now, can you?
"And the laundry got me be-
cause I didn't have a washing
machine, so I had to do every-
thing in the bathtub — sheets,
towels, everything. Each time
I'd show or tell my classes
about an artist and his work
and his life, it would occur to
me: this man had never done
his own laundry!"

Unwritten Stories

Bryant often refers to her work
as "stories that haven't been
written."
Since returning to Detroit in
1980, Bryant's time has been
devoted to teaching and its
peripheral demands and work-
ing in area nursing homes with
the elderly, via art apprecia-
tion classes sponsored by the
Levine Institute.

Jerusalem-Two silver amulets from the 7th century BCE contain the
oldest biblical text ever found, predating the earliest biblical texts
known previously by four centuries. At right is an artist's rendering of
the smaller amulet that made the translation possible. The text is
