ast
month,
Jewish
youngsters ages 12-16 com-
peted in the Maccabi Youth
Games. Now it is time for
the master and senior par-
ticipants to step forward.
Those age 50 and over can corn-
pete in various activities as part of
the Master and Senior Maccabi
Games scheduled for Sept. 28 at the
Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield. As part of the inaugural
games, the JCC and Sinai Hospital
have scheduled a Wellness Fair with
various booths and demonstrations
on health and fitness.
We have never done anything
this competitive or of this nature for
this age group," said Marty Oliff,
coordinator of the event and director
of health and physical education at
the Center. "It is also the first time
we have conducted this event as a
cooperative venture with Sinai."
Participants, mostly from the
metropolitan Detroit area along with
some from Ohio; plan on competing
in some of 14 events including
swimming, mah jong, table tennis,
duplicate bridge, track and field,
racquetball, backgammon, tennis,

Trivial Pursuit, squash, chess, vol-
leyball, pan (a unique card game
from the 1930s), and a basket free
throw competition.
Summer clinics were held in
July, August and last Sunday for in-
dividuals interested in competing.
The clinics were not well attended,
but the JCC staff anticipates 100-
150 participants for the first year
Master and Senior Games. We feel
that this is a good number for a
first-year event," added Oliff.
Activities get underway on Sept.
28 with the 'opening ceremonies
slated for 8 a.m. Competition begins
at 8:30 and continues until 7 p.m. A
7:30 p.m. banquet and closing cere-
monies conclude the day.
Winners at the Detroit games do
not advance to national Maccabi
events as do the youth and veterans
divisions. But this could serve as a
feeder to the veterans division in the
future," explained Oliff. "There has
never been anything like this be-
fore."
The Wellness Fair and par-
ticipatory events are scheduled con-
