Shaarey Zedek. Jennifer Schaumberg, daughter- of Ellie and Joel Schaumberg, and Jennifer Shubow, daughter of Elisabeth and Robert Shubow, have written to their Soviet twin, Olga, for many months. It is their hope that the twinning with a Soviet youngster of the same age will call attention to the plight of Soviet Jews who are unable to practice Judaism openly. Olga, daughter of Eleonara Golland and Alexey Sverdlin, are refuseniks living in Tashkent. Their relative in Israel, Eleonara's brother in Bat Yam, has written urgent appeals asking for reunifica- tion for the family. In 1978, when Eleonara applied for emigration, she had been an.orchestra leader and teacher of music, but she was immediately fired. Alexey, an engineer, had been employed at Tashkent Polytechnical Institute. Now he is working as a night watchman. The family's morale and economic situation are poor. Cong. Shaarey Zedek will be asked to send letters of con- gratulation to Olga and her family and show solidarity. Their address is: Sverdlin Family, Kvartal TZ 5, No 46, Apt 15, Tashkent, USSR. of West Bloomfield SUGAR TREE ORCHARD LAKE ROAD, NORTH OF MAPLE 851-1022 UNIQUE! TILL 9 Twinning Marked At Adat Shalom Joshua Freedland and David Jacobowitz will twin the observance of their b'nai mitzvah celebration at 9 a.m. Saturday at Adat Shalom Synagogue with Emil Guberman of Moscow, USSR. Igor Guberman is the author of popular books and science articles for young people. Active in the Jewish cultural movement, he was an editor of the underground journal, Jews in the USSR. In December 1978, he applied for exit visas. And in the spring of 1979, he was offered a visa if he would collaborate with KGB agents. Instructed "to keep an eye on emigrating Jews and to denounce and prepare pro- vocations against Jewish ac- tivists," he refused. He was arrested then on false charges of illegally purchas- ing and selling of icons. He had been collecting such re- lics for many years in a per- fectly legal manner. Guberman was brought to trial in March 1980. He was convicted on evidence supplied by two known thieves and sentenced to five years at hard labor. His sen- tence was upheld on appeal on April 23, 1980. He was later revealed as the author of a satirical epigram, Jewish Charivari circulated unoffi- cially in Russia and pub- lished even in Israel under a pseudonym. Joshua and David have written to Emil and will at- tempt to contact the family by phone. Jodi Weiss Twins Her Bat Mitzvah Jodi Melissa Weiss, daugh- ter of Gary and Annie Weiss of West Bloomfield will share her bat mitzvah with Ulitskaya and Yulia Vic- torovna of the USSR at 8 p.m. today at Temple Israel. Ulitskaya and Yulia are the twin daughters of Lud- milla Philipovna of Odessa. Both Ludmilla and her mother, Esphir Murash, have sought exit visas since 1981, citing an invitation received from Esphir's brother in Is- rael. Each refusal of a visa has come back with the "explana- tion" that there is insufficient kinship. The latest attempt was made as recently as a month ago. This information was received after speaking to a cousin in California. Both the mother and daugh- ter do not work and the fam- ily is in desperate financial need. Jodi is an eighth grader at Orchard Lake Middle School.
