Israelis Revive
African Eye
Disease Project

Jerusalem (JTA) — The re-
cent thaw in relations be-
tween Israel and the Black
African nations that broke
diplomatic ties with it after
the 1973 Yom Kippur War
will revive a project under-
- taken by Israeli ophthalmolo-
__ gists 27 years ago to eradi-
cate eye diseases common to
tropical Africa, it was an-
nounced last Monday.
Four Israeli ophthalmolo-
gists will establish eye clinics
in Africa shortly. Their work
is a continuation of Project
Exodus, established in 1959
by the late Prof. Isaac Mich-
aelson of Hadassah Hospital
in Jerusalem to fight such eye
diseases as trachoma and
river blindness.
Michaelson had succeeded
-- in eradicating them in Israel
and his procedures were in-
troduced in many African
1 countries by Israeli doctors in
the 1960. An international
symposium dedicated to
Michaelson's memory recent-
ly closed in Jerusalem.
It was organized by Had-
assah Hospital and attended
by ophthalmologists from 26
countries including Poland,
Hungary, Lesotho, Liberia
and Haiti.

Jerusalem (JTA) — Over
100 Jewish leaders from more
than 30 communities
throughout the United States
raised $22.1 million to kick-
off the 1987 UJA/Federation
Campaign, plus an additional
$2.3 million in new money
for Project Renewal, on the
three-day 1987 United
Jewish Appeal Prime Minis-
ter's Mission.
"The money raised for the
regular campaign represented
a 21 percent increase by the
same donors over the prev-
ious year and is the largest
amount ever raised by any
UJA Prime Minister's Mis-
sion in history," said UJA
National Chairman Martin
Stein.

Arab Education
Inequality Seen

Jerusalem (JTA) — A team
of Arab educators warned
that the situation in the Arab
educational system in Israel
has reached a new low.
At a Tel Aviv press confer-
ence, the educators said an
Arab child is two years be-
hind a Jewish child of the
same age in reading com-
prehension. The speakers
said this was the result of a
persistent gap in infrastruc-
ture, school classes, teachers
and books.
