CAJE Conference
Focuses On Pluralism

New York — The eleventh
annual Conference on Alter-
natives in Jewish Education
held at the University of
Maryland last monthbrought
together 2,100 teachers, ad-
ministrators, parents,
authors, scholars and artists
from 42 states, six Canadian
provinces and seven other
countries including Israel,
England, Cuba and South Af-
rica.
In over 600 sessions, con-
ferees explored subjects rang-
ing from computers in the
classroom, teaching Israel
and the Holocaust, Torah and
Talmud study, to personal
spirituality and creating fam-
ily folklore. The 400 pre-
senters were CAJE members
who shared their expertise
with their colleagues.
Participants were surprised
by a greeting from Anatoly
Shcharansky who pre-
recorded a message to CAJE
members to pursue the ideals
of Jewish education that had
been so important to him
throughout his years of im-
prisonment in the Soviet
Union.
The role of Jew in Ameri-
can politics was examinied in
a panel discussion by Hyman
Bookbinder, special consul-
tant to the American Jewish
Committee, Stuart Eizenstat,
former domestic advisor to
President Jimmy Carter and
Max Green, of the White
House public liason office.
Over 100 CAJE members
met with congressional repre-
sentatives in a political ac-
tion day in Washington and
delivered protests on behalf
of Soviet dissidents to Soviet
embassy officials.

Shamir Denies
Allegations

Jerusalem (JTA) — Deputy
Prime Minister Yitzhak
Shamir has rejected allega-
tions by the former head of
the Shin Bet that he had
authorized the beating deaths
of two Palestinian bus hijac-
kers and subsequent coverup
two years ago. According to
local press reporters, Shamir
was interrogated on his role
in the affair. Shamir was
prime minister at the time of
the hijacking, which came to
an end when the bus was
stormed by Israeli soldiers.
Two of the four hijackers
were killed during the storm-
ing of the bus, but two were
taken alive and subsequently
beaten to death during inter-
rogation by Shin Bet agents.
According to reports,
Shamir told his interrogator,
Police Inspector-General
David Kraus, that he had
learned of the death of the
two captured terrorists in the
hands of the security forces
only after the affair.

Israel To Focus
On Rights Issues

United Nations (JTA) —
Israel is planning to focus its
efforts in the 41st session of
the UN General Assembly,
which opens Sept. 17, on
human rights issues.
"We want to draw the
world's attention to the
plights of Jews in the Soviet
Union, Syria, Iran and
elsewhere," . Binyamin
Netanyahu, Israel's ambas-
sador to the UN, told the
Jewish Telegraphic Agency.
"We shall warn the grow-
ing threat of anti-Semitism
and we shall demand that
more be done to expose and
prosecute Nazi war criminals.
All of Jewish experience tell
us that to be silent in the
face of repression is to insure
its continuity."
