FOOD & SPIRITS

the youngest member of the
cast.
With everyone in the
Funny Girl company calling
for more Jewish theater, it
leads one to wonder exactly
what they have in mind.
What is Jewish theater?
The Funny Girl gang seems
to think of it mainly as thea-
ter produced and performed
by Jews for Jews. Jewish con-
tent is secondary.
Funny Girl is a marginally
Jewish vehictr. A musical-
comedy about the career of
the real-life Ziegfeld Follies
comedienne Fanny Brice, the
show turns on her relation-
ship with gambler Nick
Arnstein (played by Rob Pat-
teri). Their Judaism is
merely incidental. Words like
"bagel" and "shmooze" are
thrown in to give the story a
Jewish "aroma," but the
Jewish experience in America
— or in show biz, for that
matter — is not the point
here.
"Obviously I have to pick
plays with- Jewish content,"
says Gurwin. "But not all the
plays have to be ... These
shows are hopefully mounted
for everyone to see ... I want
everyone from all walks of
life to come."
One week before opening
night, rehearsals were in full
swing. The outlines of the
polished production are evi-
dent, although the show's
seams had not yet been sewn
up.
"You've gotta leave those
boxes on stage, boys," co-
director Guest bellows as one
scene leads, haltingly, into
the next. "Two green tables,
Danny ... Break out the fake
stool ..."
Guest and Brassert have
been working together for ten
years and with Gurwin for
eight. They say their team ef-
fort allows them the flexibil-
ity of directing separate as-
pects of the production simul-
taneously. They feel their
work complements each
other's.
"I lean very heavily on her
sense of color and style for
costumes," Guest says. "If she
says she doesn't like some-
thing and says it's wrong, it's
wrong!"
"I know what he's going to
say before he says it," Bras-
sert responded.
All that singing and danc-
ing takes a lot of energy, and
everyone is coming to rehear-
sals from somewhere else,
after a full day of work or
school.
"I haven't sat down since
seven this morning," says
chorus member Deborah
Schwartz, 21, as 9 p.m. rolls
around.
On stage, Schwartz doesn't
seem tired at all, performing
as if this is the first thing she
has done that day, Father
than the last. She says the
company has been rehearsing
four or five times a week, up
to four hours per session. The
