And as for his worries
about the public schools, in
decline, so he thinks because
the curricula omit prayers,
could he really inject religion
into the classroom? If he har-
bors such a dream, he might
want to note a recent de-
velopment in Poland. There,
it's the communist govern-
ment that wants religion
taught in the schools. Which
religion? A strange one in-
deed — atheism.

Elie Wiesel is a gadol
b'Yisroel, a remarkable per-
sonality, profound thinker,
gifted writer, eloquent
spokesman for the Jewish
cause. We cannot spare his
talents for any other cause;
charity begins at home. His
taking up cudgels for the de-
fense of the apartheid blacks
(your issue of Aug. 22) is un-
convincing; he is out of his
element. We Jews have no
quarrel with South Africa.
They have established a fine
civilization, they offered a
haven to our people, Jews
have prospered there.
Numerous South African
Jews have contributed sig-
nificantly to Israel, notably
Abba Eban and many others.
Elie Wiesel does not have
to be holier than the Pope,
nor, for that matter, holier
than Ronald Reagan. We
Jews have our differences
with the President; his sup-
plying the Saudis with nu-
clear sweets; his attempt to
rehabilitate at Bitburg the
dead German Nazi murderers
of our people; his Mideast
peace plan, shades of Nevil

President, if he has his way,
would deliver Israel to Yasir
Arafat.
Notwithstanding, Reagan
has been a resourceful Chief
Executive, a wise adminis-
trator, a skillful negotiator —
a world leader. He proceeds
very cautiously about sanc-
tions against South Africa.
The Jews owe nothing to
the blacks in or out of Africa;
neither those who cheered
Hitlerite Louis Farrakhan,
nor the newly hatched Afri-
can states who sold out for
petro dollars at the UN.
