On a Toronto business trip, she noticed an interesting sweater in the window and went into the store. Here she coincidentally met the designer, Marian Maggiben, who became her future partner. After that meeting, they decided to design some sweaters together. The woven sweaters, mixed with leather and suede fabrics, sold well. In 1982, Marian Maggiben and Nili Katz formed the company Marianili, manufacturing clothes in Toronto. Today sales amount to nearly 1/2 million Marianili has sold to many local boutiques including Zeza, Roz & Sherm, Scott Gregory, and Janet Varner. Nationally, the clothes are also sold in exclusive boutiques, some on Rodeo Drive and Worth Avenue. "The design is European looking and the fabric is beautiful," says Pary Berenjian, owner of Zeza in Southfield. Zeza will be carrying the new fall collection. For fall '86, there's coordinating outfits with trumpet skirts and large tops with a black and purple geometric design. A winter white outfit is available with a matching top, skirt, and pants. Colors range from basic black, white, and brown to deep purple, blue, and green. Many outfits combine tweeds and plaids. If the top is one plaid, the skirt may use the same colors with a different, subtle plaid. Some pieces are detailed with leather and suede. One line is entitled primitive prints and almost looks like a Miro sketch. Katz mentions that she loves the Art Deco Period, which she believes influences her designs. "I think she's a very creative person," says her husband, Uri Katz, head of an executive search firm. "She developed a feel for what will be well received," adds her husband.
