we're selling cord pants with
elastic waists."
For boys' back to school shoes,
Tom Schey, owner of Hansel &
Gretel Shoe Store in West
Bloomfield and Hansel 'N Gretel
Shoppe in Birmingham, says,
"The percentage of sneakers
worn instead of school shoes has
increased dramatically. This fall's
biggest shoe will continue to be
the Reebok soft garment leather
with ties. In fact, we will be selling
boys' aerobic shoes in black and
grey. Now kids can really wear
their sneakers everywhere and
for every occasion."
Fleece will also be a staple in
girls' back to school wardrobes.
Karen Larkin, manager of
Gould's Children's Boutique in
Bloomfield Township, showed:
sedate collegiate sweatshirts
with university seals and Greek
letters, glitzy sweatshirts full of
colorful studs, rhinestones, lace
flowers, antique buttons, pins and
ribbons.
Sweatshirts are also versatile
for children. They are used as
long, almost-to-the-knee tops
that can be used as a dress over
tights or as a top over leggings.
(Leggings are knit, leg-hugging,
long underwear-like pants.)
Detroit's stores are showing
specialty fleece: appliqued,
puff-painted and velour.
Girls' tops continue to be
oversized and sassy. New to this
season is the cut-away shirt, a
trendy version of a tuxedo jacket
with tails. Hip length in front, the
shirt is much longer in the back
and often has tails.
Reversible tops are also big
this year and high-necked, plaid
flannel shirts with contrasting
colored sides. One side has a
bright colored pattern, while the
other side has muted colors.
Patterns and pattern mixing will
be popular this fall. Bond, black
lines outline abstract Aztec
patterns on vibrant jewel-like
colored backgrounds. Expect to
see black patterns on ruby red,
emerald green, topaz yellow,
amethyst purple or sapphire blue.

Gould's is showing pattern
mixing in layered tops. A skimp
with a bold puzzle print pattern is
worn over a collared shirt whose
pattern is smaller and a little bit
different, but still complimentary.
The layered look continues to
be popular this fall. Wear a long
sleeve skimp (knit, fleece, flannel
or wool) over a turtle neck or
collared shirt. (Don't tuck
anything in.) Underneath the
shirts, wear straight, tight to the
ankle denims, either stone
washed or patterned. Look for
denims with black zig zag
abstracts.

Wear ribbed, hand painted
leggings or knit straight skirts. Or,
just wear tights. But don't stop
there, Schey at Hansel & Gretel
Shoes explains the fun kids will
have layering their socks. "Put on
a soft one-color cotton tight and
then wear a slouchy sock of
another color and texture.
(Slouchy socks are socks that
just don't stand up straight .. .
and they come in three different
heights and thicknesses: anklet,
crew and boot. Buy your socks to
match the type of shoes you're
wearing.)
