proportion, skirts may be full or
slim, wrapped or pleated, but
always in the long length.
"Pleated skirts, in wool or knit,
are dynamite," says Stein.
"Also, circle skirts, swingy
skirts — any skirt that
`moves.' " In fashion today,
though, there is something for
everyone, which means that
plenty of short skirt (and dress,

too) styles are available for
women who prefer them.
Gleaming smooth leather
and supple suede are more
popular than ever this season,
with a variety of separates
presented in leading sports-
wear collections. Stein predicts
the two most popular leather
skirts — the yoke-waist full cir-
cle skirt, and the long slim

skirt that zips up the side "so
you can show as much leg as
you want." Leather and suede
come in traditional colors like
black, brown and beige as well
as such fashion forward colors
as red, burgundy, purple, navy
blue and loden green.
Classic blouse styles include
the long-sleeved tailored shirt,
in solid colors and subdued
patterns, in silk and cotton.
Other styles range from turtle-
neck silk blouses with dolman
sleeves to wool jersey blouses
with multi-colored jeweled
studs.
However, says Pauline Moses
of the Pauline Moses shops, in
Pikesville, Owings Mills and
Bethesda, "The sweater mar-
ket is better than the blouse
market this season. There's
much more variety in sweat-
ers." Indeed, from classy
cashmeres and angoras to
handknits, sweaters take top
billing this fall.
The oversized look has been
modified from last season. Lin-
da Scherr of Rococo, in Corn-
mercentre, says, "Handknit
sweaters come in wool and in
cotton. Generally, they're long
and very colorful, many with
woven-in geometric patterns.
Cotton sweaters are now con-
sidered a basic wardrobe
item — in solid colors, and with
polo, boatneck or turtleneck
collars."
