Fall '86:
Soft,
Simple
and
Sophisticated
BY CARLA JEAN SCHWARTZ
illr he key words for fall
and winter are soft,
simple and
sophisticated. Clothes
gently drape the body in a
feminine style. There's varied
proportions — long or short — in
dresses, coats, and skirts. While
the fabrics are luxurious and
dramatic, the overall mood is
simple yet elegant.
According to Linda Dresner, of
Linda Dresner in Somerset Mall
and Park Ave. N.Y., "The clothes
are classic and rich, and the word
is quality."
Anna Bassett, of Claire
Pearone, notes the look is
narrow, but very flattering and
feminine. She also offers this
advice: "You cannot go
according to size this season,
because the manufacturers are
cutting clothes narrower. I'm a
size eight and I'm wearing a size
ten in some clothes."

this season is grey. From dove
grey to deep, charcoal — all
variations prevail. Other constant
colors are white, ivory, black and
brown. Also appearing are
greens and accents of red,
purple, and turquoise.
Monochromatic dressing is
very popular. It's a season of
subtle color with solid skirts,
sweaters, and dresses. A solid
colored dress for day and
evening dressing is a good
investment this year. "That little
black dress is coming back," says
Ray Epstein, co-owner of Ray &
Ida.
