He confessed the reason. "I was wearing the same yellow and green checked oxford shirt I wore 19 years ago in English class." How do you shop for him tastefully and tactfully? 1. Find a men's store with the right image. Don't go too trendy, but stay away from resale shops with 1960s sportswear in the window. Stick to one or two stores. 2. Find a salesperson you can trust. Look for the career employee, buyer or owner who'll help you coordinate ties, shirts and suits and be there the next few seasons to fill in and help you add to previous purchases. 3. Go shopping alone. Don't take the kids. Don't take your husband. They will make a fuss with their protests and impatience. y 4. Take along accurate measurements and sizes. Measure your husband; don't rely on the sizes in his closet. For shirts — neck and sleeve length, for pants — waist and inseam, for sportcoats and suits — chest measurements, for belts — waist measurement. Forget shoes; let him buy his own! 5. Bring home only two or three choices for each category. Let him have a chance to decide which color or style best suits him.
