Looks

much narrower than the previous
seasons with skinny skirts and
tapered pants in clingy knitted
fabrics, the nice thing is that
everyone can wear it," says Mrs.
Fleischman. "Many of our items
that we bought for fall are
`one-size-fits-all.' "
The secret? Its in the topping,
Mrs. Fleischman feels. "We have
been selling these skinny cotton
knits in big girls and petite ones,
from age eleven to age forty. No

sequins, studs and embroidery.
"Called Freego, this line takes up
1%3 of the 1800 square foot
department," says assistant
manager Dawn Lindsay. "The
only frankly masculine attire we
are featuring for the fall are black
suspenders. They have been a
hot-selling item with baggy pants
and ten-button cotton jersey long
sleeved shirts, nicknamed
"henleys," which come in a
dozen different colors and are an
updated version of the
turn-of-the-century collarless
undershirt," she says.
With the trend toward a more
subdued way of outfitting,
legwear has become an
inexpensive way to exercise a bit
of flamboyance. Solid colored
tights and big slouchy-fitting
socks are prominently featured
around Detroit area stores. Often
the tights and socks are layered
