at home on the range. A shiny, licorice-black leather, they're embellished with twining grape leaves in royal purple. On another pair, stylized circus-bright carousel designs are worked into the leather. On still another the "Gone With The Wind" boot you'll see images of Clark Gable as Rhett Butler. More news in shoes includes an interest in the pointed-toe look, according to Larry Ochs, owner of The Next Step in West Bloomfield. "It's a very sleek, clean-looking shoe. White, flat boots look good, and white looks to be the new neutral for fall." According to Stan Zerman, owner of Sandilar and Sandilar Too, in Applegate, "Shoes with a Chanel influence are very popular." He describes the shoes as having a Chanel tip, with a contrasting color, and chain ornaments. "Metallics are very strong, and pewter seems to be the big color," he adds. Short, lace-up boots are part of the chic safari look growing in popularity, says Stephen Scott, general manager at Zodiac in Birmingham. He also sees what he calls "man-tailored" shoes. "They're something like chukka boots, but more fashionable." Scott says he's noticing much more color this fall than last. Along with the metallics, mustard yellow appears promising, he says, but is still a definite "maybe." Gloves may be taking on new importance. At Baggit, Woolman sees them as "a little dressier" this year. Usually in two-button and four-button length, they're often accented with cutouts or made of embossed leathers. At Ylang-Ylang, some typify this year's "fun, but elegant" mood in fashion. In black, the gloves are made of cashmere, and accented in whimsical, pink and black cabbage-rose designs.
