Joan Wittenberg, owner of Ylang-Ylang at Somerset Mall in Troy, confirms the forecast toward outsized, dramatic jewelry pieces, along with the popularity of matte-finish silver. "Much of it looks simply great with the suedes and the fringed jackets," she says. Cuff bracelets are special favorites, too. At Ylang-Ylang, turquoise is often combined with the oxidized silver pieces, by such artists as Julie Holgado. At Ylang-Ylang in Troy, owner Joan Wittenberg also predicts a good future this fall for belts in leather tanned to look like leopard, zebra, or cheetah. Gloria Woolman at Baggit in Southfield says she's seeing many belts and handbags also in leopard and zebra trim. Speaking of handbags, indications are that there's an infinite variety this season. "Our handbags are mostly large and in soft leathers," says Woolman. Frank notices a trend toward matching handbags with shoes again. She also sees shoe-buyers developing a very strong interest in unusual textures like suede, snakeskin, and brocades. A high-cut version of the classic pump, done by Stuart Weitzman in kid, patent leather, suede, mock lizard, and satin looks very good for fall, says Frank. Also popular are pumps which will be as glittery as the jewelry you'll be wearing. "This year, clothes are long and short, and close to the body and full," says Frank. "And, there are high heels, low heels, mid-size heels, flats, boots to go with those looks. Boots are wonderful this year in black fake lizard, bronze colors, pewter colors."
