MANUFACTURING CO

The pervasive use of clear,
strong colors seems to distin-
guish the majority of fashion
now coming from Israel.
Especially in beach and leisure-
wear, bright colors predominate,
and have a universal appeal.
Gottex, the leading manufacturer
of Israeli swim and beachwear,
capitalizes both on sophisticated
lines and the bold use of color.
Selling more than one million
pieces annually in 63 countries
around the world, Gottex fur-
thered its international reputation
last year by being featured on
the cover of Sports Illustrated.
Gottex continues to be one of
the forces in Israeli fashion, as
noted by the crowds surrounding
the Gottex booth at the biannual
Fashion Buyers Week held in
Jerusalem last spring. The show
is a concerted effort by Israel's
Ministry of Trade to encourage
international buyers to come to
Israel.
At the show, buyers from
abroad are shown the latest
Israeli offerings in a highly
focused yet relaxed at-
mosphere and Israeli
designers are not forced to
compete for strategically
located showrooms with larger
concerns. Through the Buyers
Week, it is also possible for the
buyers to speak directly with the
manufacturers in order to
negotiate special orders and
needs. One of the greatest
obstacles the Israeli fashion in-
dustry faces is distance, and
shows of this nature are ex-
tremely important.

A small section of the design
world, but one that appears late-
ly to be growing in scope, is
fashion for religiously observant
women. At the recent Buyers
Week, the sold-out fashion show
attested to the fact that this is a
segment of the population
whose time in the fashion world
has definitely come.

A young generation of
designers, born and trained in
Israel, is making its presence
