SEPTEMBER SPECIAL

/:

stantly being surrounded by
children in the village. They
would pass him notes asking
him to send' them school
supplies and books, which he
plans on sending for the four-
thcoming school year.
Due to a clever plan, he
was able to tour the village
by himself for several hours
which, he was told by the vil-
lagers, was very unusual.
"The group that I came with
had to leave to catch a plane,
but my flight was later in the
day," he said. He had
scheduled the later flight on
purpose. Once he obtained
permission from the NTO to
travel to the village, "I was
sent to the airlines to pur-
chase a plane ticket and
bought a later flight and got
to stay longer." He used that
time to explore the village
without a "chaperone" and
meet the villagers. "It seemed
like I was traveling through
time because nothing had
changed for hundreds of
years," he said.
His stay in Ethiopia was
nine days but, only one was
spent in the village. The re-
maining days were spent in
meetings that were arranged
by the U.S. Embassy. "Those
meetings were unrelated to
Ethiopian Jews. They were
with colleagues in my profes-
sion to discuss mutual areas
of interest like economic de-
velopment," he said. Edels-
tein is employed at the Uni-
versity of Michigan. "My re-
sponsibility is to serve as
liaison between private in-
dustry and the University of
Michigan."
MAEJ is a non-profit-
organization that in the past
has partially subsidized trips,
but Edelstein "took the
money out of my own
pocket."
He has been president of
MAEJ since last year. The
organization was formed in
1983 by Hirshhorn, an Ann
Arbor resident. "At that time,
there was little awareness of
the fact that there were Jews
in Ethiopia and they were
being persecuted for their
faith," she explained. "We are
trying to keep alive the fact
that immigration did not end
with Operation Moses and
that it is still going on." (Op-
eration Moses was the secret
airlift of Ethiopian Jews into
Israel, which was revealed in
January 1985).
Edelstein estimates that
15,000 Ethiopian Jews have
made aliyah but 10,000 to
50,000 still remain in
Ethiopia.
The organization is in con-
tact with the American Asso-
ciation for Ethiopian Jews
and is affiliated with. the
Jewish Community Council
in Ann Arbor as well as other
organizations throughout the
United States that perform
similar functions.
