S. of Birmingham Theatre 642-9400 • Casual Dress • Major Credit Cards Accepted • Birmingham Luncheon Shuttle Bus Provided, 60 Friday, September 5, 1986 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Linda Solomon sits at her desk surrounded by portraits she has photographed. along with an interview about her work. Solomon shrugs most of that away as only another exciting chapter from the past. One of her goals is to arrange an interview with former President Richard Ni- xon. Don't discount that as im- possible. With sensitivity and com- passion for her subjects, she's been able to snag interviews with celebrities who normally avoid the press, creating a touch of envy in the heart of more than one seasoned jour- nalist. Detroit Mayor Coleman Young recently opened the doors to the Manoogian Man- sion and allowed Solomon to photograph several rooms there, a rare, if not one-time occurrence for Young. Earlier this year, she asked for and got permission to interview Motown's Barry Gordy and later managed to get a personal interview with press-shy Magic Johnson. "My approach to a celebrity is first to introduce myself. And, then I tell them which newspaper I'm from. I'm very professional and I always ask permission before snapping a photograph. "Everything I do is done in a very formal manner. Some- times you never know the kind of odd requests that many celebrities will make. Julio Iglesias, for example, will only allow photographers to photograph him from the right side of his face. It's al- ways unusual because you're dealing with people who are very concerned with the way they look. So, they have kind of unusual demands at times." One of Solomon's greatest coups took place in New York a few years back when she snapped one of the first pic- tures of Mary Cunningham and William Agee of Bendix fame together. When rumors of that couple's romance hit the front page of newspapers around the country, Solomon, was able to name her price for that timely photograph. "It was almost like hitting a jackpot, really. It can be very, very lucrative . when something like that hap- pens," said Solomon. Her photo of Agee and Cunningham appeared in Time and in Newsweek's pic- torial review of 1980. In 1979, Solomon worked on the movie, Tiger Town, with Roy Scheider. Some of the still photographs she shot also were published in Time and Sports Illustrated maga- zines. - After all is said and done, Solomon's favorite subject, her hero and a woman she hopes very much to emulate is Barbara Walters. In 1984, Walters granted Solomon an interview and Solomon flew to New York. "Up until that time she had only agreed to interviews for cover stories. "I will never forget the per- sonal details of that day, it was a real thrill to meet and interview this woman whom I've always admired," said Solomon. "She has a level of confi- dence, but she was extremely honest. She could be so ap-_ proachable, so vulnerable." Last Christmas, Solomon received a beautiful gift- wrapped box of gourmet food from Walters as well as an autographed copy of Walters' book entitled How to Talk To. On an inside page, Walters had inscribed: "To Linda who doesn't need the advice in this book." Since then, Solomon and _< Walters have corresponded several .times. "I've never opened that box of gourmet food though because I want to < keep it forever as a remem- brance from Barbara Wal- ters," said Solomon.
