vation for a religious com-
munity determines its idea
of God.
A people's historic transac-
tion with its environment in
its quest for maximum life
leads it to identify those
aspects of the cosmos which
support its goal. That which
brings order out of chaos,
fosters world responsibility,
love and creativity manifests
divinity and shapes the idea
of God. The conscious quest
for self-fulfillment presup-
poses that reality is patterned
so as to contain the means of
satisfying it. The inference
from the yearning and striv-
ing for salvation to the ex-
istence of conditions favoring
salvation is a "willed faith"
which derives not from logic
but from the conscious quest
to live with a maximum
fullness.
Such faith is neither pas-
sive nor arbitrary but calls for
wisdom to explore the real
and potential good and for
the will to activate that good.
The uniqueness of the Jewish
idea of God reflects the
historic uniqueness of the
Jewish people's career in its
search for purpose and mean-
ing. For the individual Jew
the Jewish people is the chief
source of his salvation.

Shawa Granted
Citizenship

Jerusalem (JTA) — King
Hussein of Jordan granted
Jordanian citizenship to the
former mayor of Gaza,
Rashad A-Shawa, and six
members of his family.
Residents of Gaza have no
citizenship and travel on spe-
cial refugee papers. Shawa
received his citizenship in
appreciation for his support
of Hussein's policies, accord-
ing to a statement issued in
Amman, Jordan.

Aid To Victims

New York (JTA) — Lester
Pollack, president of the
Jewish Community Relations
Council of Greater New York
(JCRC), presented a check for
$5,000 to Tommo Monthe,
charge d'affaires at the
Cameroon Mission to the
United Nations, to help the
surviving victims of the vol-
conic gas leak in that country
which killed an estimated
1,500 people.

Today, thanks partly to
the efforts of the American
Heart Association, the death
rate from rheumatic heart
disease has declined more
than 70 percent since 1950.
For decades, the
American Heart
Association's educational
programs have taught par-
ents about the dangers and
prevention of rheumatic
fever and rheumatic heart
disease in young children.
