Security Tight
At IPO Concert

Staff Report

Security at the Israel
Philharmonic Orchestra's
concert at Meadowbrook Fes-
tival, Aug. 28, was tight,
with an increased presence of
security personnel and other
measures taken by Meadow-
brook and the Oakland Uni-
versity Police.
"We're pleased that (the
concert) went without inci-
dent. We plan for all con-
tingencies," said Mel Gilroy,
OU's assistant director of
public safety.
Gilroy would not discuss
the specific steps taken by
the police to beef up security.
One concertgoer noted that
that coolers were being
checked and patrons were
only allowed to reenter the
facilities through a single
entrance. The concert was
co-sponsored by the Jewish
Welfare Federation of Met-
ropolitan Detroit as part of
its 60th anniversary..
Coolers are checked at cer-
tain concerts, admitted Greg
Bloomfield, Meadowbrook's
assistant for administration
and associate production di-
rector.
As to who ordered the in-
creased security, the IPO,
Meadowbrook or OU police,
Bloomfield said, "The public
safety department of the uni-
versity as well as Meadow-
brook felt it was important to
have increased security at
the concert." He declined to
say whether there was a
known threat prior to the
performance.
Gilroy said he felt the se-
curity precautions taken were
adequate: "The feedback we
received from the Israeli se-
curity agent traveling with
the group was very positive."

IDF Officers
Switch Posts

ml Aviv (JTA) — Maj.
Gen. Yitzhak Mordechai
took up his new post as of-
ficer commanding the Israel
Defense Force's Southern
Command facing the Sinai
last week, the first move in
a complicated and con-
troversial game of musical
chairs involving the move-
ment of many senior IDF
officers switching army
posts among themselves.
The decision of Chief of
Staff, Lt. Gen. Moshe Levy,
supported by Defense Min-
ister Yitzhak Rabin, albeit
apparently reluctantly, has
been severely criticized by
politicians and many army
officers.
The main criticism is of
the short period of time
many of the officers involv-
ed have served in their new
appointmeiits -- which
many critics say was not
time enough for them to
give their best service to the
IDF.
