year old boy, "but I caught
Poopsie instead!"
Jason's mother seemed not
at all nonplused by her son's
declaration. A progressive
mother, she allowed Jason
and his older sister to roam
the waiting room at will while
the vet attended to pathetic
Poopsie in one of the treat-
ment rooms.
At first Jason's antics• were
cute. "What's wrong with
your dog?" the boy demand-
ed of each pet owner seated
around the room. Some own-
ers dutifully played the game.
But not every pet was there
for a checkup. And who
wants to proclaim to a room
full of strangers that their
dog has diarrhea?
Worse yet was the predica-
ment of the man who had just
arranged to have his dog put
to sleep. As Jason aproached,
the large, grizzled hound did
not even raise his head from
his master's feet. Tactfully,
the man replied to the boy's
persistent questioning with a
lie.
Poopsie, whose nose had
survived to sniff another tree,
was representative of the pets
who came in with a physical
problem.
A Doberman pinscher
named Max, on the other
hand, suffered from an iden-
tity problem. Correction.
Max's owner — a twenty-
year-old Arnold Schwartzen-
ager lookalike — had the iden-

tity problem. Mr. "Cool" kept
his pet on a choke chain and
a short, tight leash which he
repeatedly jerked in an effort
to exact strict canine obedi-
ence. But Max's macho master
failed to recognize that his
"attack dog" was just a
puppy, albeit one with platter-
sized paws. And no puppy
can act tough when its recent-
ly cropped ears are still
swathed in bandages and pro-
tected by clownish-looking
cones. At a growl from a pint-
sized Pekingese, Max dissolv-
ed into pitiable howls and.the
owner's cool melted.
