THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

I

Marx, Engels and Lenin fill
the streets of Ethiopia, but
"the people really despise and
resent it. They hate the Rus-
sians with a passion," he
said.
Understanding their hatred
is not hard. The government
censors the press and televi-
sion, quashes freedom of ex-
pression and bans private
ownership of industry. And,
as Edelstein experienced,
permission must be granted
before any travel is allowed.
Since he arrived during
Pesach, he was able to wit-
ness some of the Ethiopian
Jews, customary ritual prac-
tices. "They are very or-
thodox and scrupulous about
their dietary laws," he said.
When Edelstein distributed
some money to community
leaders, they used it to pur-
chase a bull to sacrifice dur-
ing Passover. "They are very
observant in their own Bibli-
cal way," he explained.
Edelstein toured a syna-
gogue and their huts, created
out of sticks, straw and mud.
The most moving part of the
trip, he said, occurred when a
girl approached him 'and
asked in Hebrew if he spoke
the language. "I started
speaking to her in Hebrew
and she told me they study
the language (in the vil-
lage)."
Edelstein remembers con-

the covenant between God
and the Jewish people. It
echoes Ezra the Scribe's
convening the people in
Jerusalem to hear the To-
rah, an event which took
place some 2,400 years ago.
In keeping with the
Ethiopian's observance of
pre-talmudic Jewish ritual,
their dietary laws are pre-
dictably somewhat different
from mainstream Judaism.
For instance, their laws of
kashrut allow them to eat
milk and meat together.
They will not boil a kid in
its mother's milk, however,
in keeping with the Biblical
proscription. But there is no
such thing as separate dis-
hes.
They don't light fires on
Shabbat, so there are no
Shabbat candles, and no
warmed food. "Shaare
Zedek, Jerusalem's Or-
thodox hospital, was amazed
to find their kashrut chal-
lenged by their Ethiopian
patients," Kaplan recalls,
amused. "They had never
seen Shabbat warming tray
before, so they wouldn't eat
theiwarmed food. The hospi-
tal staff had to take the food
away and let it cool down
before the Ethiopians would
eat it."
