But Mama doeS not forget
so quickly.
"Mrs. Levy has been telling
all the neighbors what a
wonderful shopper you are.
Not like her shlemeil Mendel
who doesn't know the dif-
ference between a forshtun-
keneh egg and a fresh one.
She wants to know if maybe
you'll bring another dozen for
her daughter who is making
a bris for their first child."
Papa was trapped. He loved
to look good in Mama's eyes
and a bris is a very impor-
tant religious occasion. It
would be a mitzvah to do this
... at any cost. "I'll try.
Maybe I'll stop over to see
the farmer tomorrow."
I arrived at Papa's little
shoe repair shop just as a
skinny little man dressed in
shabby overalls was handing
Papa a brown paper bag
which Papa placed carefully
on the shelf and slowly
counted out some money into
the outstretched, grubby
hand.
"Denk you Mister. Denks"
The man spoke with a strong
Polish accent and hurridly
pocketed the money and left.
I noticed that he was carry-
ing a pair of newly-repaired
shoes in one hand.
"Hello, Papa. Is that the
farmer who brings you the
bargain eggs?" I asked.

Orchard Mall

"Some bargain! I fix his
dirty shoes ... for nothing
and still pay him 50 cents for
the eggs!" He stopped sud-
denly, realizing that his
secret was out. "Mama .
she mustn't know. She thinks
I'm such a great shopper ...
Such a mayven."
"Oh Papa, I won't tell I
swear."
"I'm such a knocker. I only
wanted Mama to think I can
handle a little too. Now she's
got me in the egg business,
delivering 50-cent eggs for a
quarter for all of her
neighbors and their children.
Some business man. Fifty
percent loss right away and
free shoe repairing."
I though Papa would grab
the bag of eggs and smash
them to the floor ... I
quickly grabbed the bag and
put it behind me. "No, Papa!
Don't feel bad and blame
yourself. You did a mitzvah
and made Mama proud of
you."
A big grin spread over Pa-
pa's face and he began to fig-
ure mentally, nodding his
head as he spoke: "Let's see
... three dozen eggs at 50
cents a dozen ... $1.50; and a
pair of dirty, torn` shoes make
like new ... $1 my cost.
That's $2.50 for Mama to
think she's married to.a prize
... It's not such a bad bar-
gain after all."

pro-Israel community have
written to pro-Israel con-
tributors describing Symms
as "Qaddafi's favorite sena-
tor," and accusing him of
"promoting a chief sponsor of
international terrorism."
The facts appear simple:
Symms visited Libya, met
Qaddafi and, initially at
least, had a poor voting re-
cord on Israel. But on closer
examination the story takes
on a different complexion.
Symms was not alone in
promoting trade links with
Libya: Evans, too, was in-
volved in the effort. Evans
sent a representative to
Libya, met with members of
Qaddafi's political party, and
welcomed a Libyan trade
delegation to Idaho.
Furthermore, Symms has
shown himself to be a far bet-
ter friend of Israel than his
detractors claim. During the
past two years, he has visited
Israel for the first time and,
in spite of intense White
House pressure, opposed arms
sales to Jordan and Saudi
Arabia. He also voted to pro-
vide Israel with $1.5 billion
in aid, even though he had
long opposed all such assis-
tance.
Many of Symms' former de-

tractors now believe that his
turn-around on Israel is
genuine. In spite of this, and
in spite of Evans' own Libyan
connection, pro-Israel institu-
tions and individuals have
ensured that Evans has re-
ceived all of the substantial
pro-Israel contributions de-
voted to the Idaho race.
By allowing bias to play a
role in its activities, the pro-
Israel community is
endangering the very support
for Israel that is its raison
d'etre. If elected, Wirth will
have no incentive to support
aid to Israel, safe in the
knowledge that he will re-
ceive Jewish support what-
ever he does. Moreover,
Symms, whose record speaks
of growing support for Israel,
may be unseated by a chal-
lenger who has no record on
the issue, save one created by
partisan promoters in the
pro-Israel community.
For those who work to
strengthen support for Israel
to be effective, they must be
honest, consistent and, above
all, fair. Their failure to do so
can only result in dis-
enchantment among shunned
Republicans, complacency
among Democrats, and a
weakening of U.S.-Israel ties.
