Miriam and Jack Shenkman

A city-wide tribute to Jack
and Miriam Shenkman by
the Lubavitch Foundation
will take place on Sept. 23, at
the Masonic Temple Theater,
where Pinchas Zuckerman
and the 50-piece St. Paul
Chamber Orchestra will per-
form in concert, following a
banquet dinner.
For the past 15 years, the
Shenkmans have been lead-
ing supporters of the
Lubavitch Foundation of
Michigan — a branch of
Chabad-Lubavitch Interna-
tional. In 1977, they dedi-
cated the Shenkman Syna-
gogue at the University of
Michigan Chabad House Stu-
dent Center in Ann Arbor.
In 1978-1979, Shenkman
spearheaded a drive to pur-
chase the Labor Zionist build-
ing for the Lubavitch cheder
and afternoon school. The
building was dedicated on
Sept. 7, 1980, as the Jack and
Miriam Shenkman Education
Center.
The schools housed in the
Shenkman Center are the
Cong. Bais Chabad afternoon
school and the Cheder for
Progressive Elementary Edu-
cation.
In
1985,
Shenkman
launched the Chai Endow-
ment project on behalf of
Lubavitch Foundation, to
encourage individuals to
make long-term commitments
for Chabad Michigan activi-
ties. To date the "Chai Club"
boasts 70 members through-
out the community.
The Shenkmans dedicated
the library at Yeshivath Beth
Yehudah, established a
scholarship fund and contrib-
uted a special room where
children with learning dis-
abilities are tested at Bar-
Ilan University, endowed an

academic chair in Post Bibli-
cal Foundations of Western
Civilizations to the Jewish
Theological Seminary; and
endowed an audio-visual
room at the Shaare Zedek
Hospital Library in
Jerusalem.
They have contributed a
room at the B'nai B'rith
Youth Village in Israel, have
been supportive of the Youth
Aliyah Talpiot Children's Vil-
lage, and have planted -a for-
est of 10,000 trees through
the Jewish National Fund.
They also are actively in-
volved in the Holocaust
Memorial Center.
The Shenkmans are sup-
porters of Hillel Day School,
and have been active with
State of Israel Bonds where
each is a Canal Founder and
Shenkman is associate gen-
eral chairman - of Metro De- -
troit Bonds.
Shenkman is past president
of the former Beth Aaron
Synagogue as well as of
United Hebrew Schools. They
recently dedicated the
Shenkman Family Haverim
Home for the Jewish Associa-
tion for Retarded Citizens.
Mrs. Shenkman was given
a National Community Lead-
ership Award in 1971 by the
Jewish Theological Seminary
and served as Michigan
Branch President for
Women's League for Conser-
vative Judaism.
Co-chairman of the tribute
are Paul Borman and David
Hermelin. Honorary Chair-
man is Gov. James J. Blan-
chard. Honorary Chairman of
the Judges and Lawyers
Committee is Frank J. Kel-
ley, attorney general of
Michigan.
