"Where You Come First" Kosins Uptown Southfield Rd. at 111/2 Mile • 559-3900 `Unholy' Slap At AIPAC Your reprint of The New Republic article (Aug. 8) by Robert Kuttner, and its title "Unholy Alliance," though it raised points of some validity, creates for our community unwarranted negative impli- cations about AIPAC, its members and activities. - Even to suggest that the pro-Israel community is in an "unholy alliance" with any political faction is an insult to Jewish intelligence and ignores the broad spectrum of legitimate political ideology within our community and across our country. The first letter of AIPAC is "A". It stands for America. We feel we act as Americans • for Americans. We are not just single issue people cap- tive of any group. Since when have liberals or conservatives ever had a franchise on the votes and money of the Jewish commu- nity? Jewish liberals have always been and still are on the front edge of human and civil rights movements and are heavily involved with political and charitable ef- forts to aid the poor. Kuttner's conspiratorial in- sinuations about the political complexion of the leadership of AIPAC is not only totally untrue and misleading, but it leads to an unsupportable conclusion. In 1985, early money went into several Re- publican races either because the candidate has such a high profile in our community and is the chairman of a key committee as in the case of Bob Packwood; or is a key pro-Israel activist and in a threatened position for re- election as in the case of Bob Kasten. The simple rule of life here is that "if you want to have a friend you have got to be a friend." Loyalty is an old American and Jewish trait. Nonetheless, by the end of 1986, at the end of this elec- toral cycle, one can safely predict that at least 70 per- cent of pro-Israel PAC money will have gone to Democrats — fully reflecting the politi- cal cross-section•of our com- munity. What shift to the right? rt Having said all the above, one fact stands taller than anything else: With the stakes so high in billions of dollars of grant aid, and mas- sive proposed arms sales to Israel's enemies and revolu- tionary changes in policy like the U.S.-Israel Free Trade Agreement, it doesn't take a mathematician to discover that only a coalition that comprises the overwhelming majority of the House and Senate will carry the day. One can't have it both ways — every hand of friendship and support in Congress and the Administration is an im- portant one. • Finally, AIPAC supports no candidates. RODNICK BROS. 772-435Q Reagan Peace Plan Criticized The Reagan Administra- tion insists Reagan's peace plan of 1982 should be the basis for negotiations be- tween Israel and the Arab states. Ronald Reagan back in January 1980 in a Detroit News interview was asked: "Should an independent Palestine be recognized?" His answer then: "I don't think this whole propaganda is fair. Palestine, as a British Man- date, was divided into Jordan and Israel. Jordan is 80 per- cent of Palestine ... The Palestinians are Arabs, they speak that language, I think they have a heritage in a number of countries . ..." Now we hear a different story from President Reagan. Now in his "peace" plan he calls for -Israel to give up Gaza and Judea-Samaria, the area west of the Jordan River in the heart of Israel. Those territories, he says, will pro- vide a "homeland" to solve "the Palestinian problem." This, the President claims, will bring "peace and secu- rity" to Israel. . Between 1949 and 1967 that territory was in Jorda- nian and Egyptian control. During that time from those areas there were 971 murder-and-sabotage mis- sions carried out by Arab ter- rorists crossing the armistice lines into Israel. In addition there was extensive artillery shelling of Israel. Altogether, 521 Israelis were killed and 1,487 wounded in these at- tacks, besides the heavy property damage. When the Arabs seized that territory in 1948, they killed nearly all the Jews of the farms and villages of the Ju- dean hills and drove out all Jews from Jerusalem's Old City. Entry of any Jews to visit their Holy Places, even as tourists, was forbidden during the Arab occupation. Should Reagan succeed and Israel loses that area, Israel would again be almost split in two — its heavily popu- lated and industrialized mid- section would be only about ten miles wide and its high- ways and airways exposed to attack ... Reagan's proposals for a second Arab Palestinian state will guarantee, not peace, but further war and bloodshed. Continued on next page the opportunity to purchase any new car at tremendous savings! We — a democrat and a Republican — think Mr. Kuttner doesn't know the pro-Israel political world of which we are active leaders. We believe that if he were to become genuinely involved he would, as all others have, see that American, Israel and the Jewish people are being well served.
