NEWS THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Jeweler Howard Tapper will receive the City of Hope "Spirit of Life" Award at a dinner in his honor on Sept. 20 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Tapper attended Wayne State University and was graduated in June 1972 with a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing. His first affili- ation with the jewelry busi- ness was in 1963 when he worked for the E.L. Rice Co. He then went on to become a buyer for the Meyer Jewelry Co. and in 1977 founded Tap- per's Jeweliy, of which he is president. Tapper's community and philanthropic endeavors in- clude, member of the Na- tional Young Leadership Cabinet of the United Jewish Appeal, Fresh Air Society, Hillel Day School, Variety Club, Bar-Ilan University, Cong. Beth Shalom, co- chairman of the Mercantile Division of the Jewish Wel- fare Federation and Big Brothers. He is currently serving as vice president of the Jewish Community Cen- ter. Sinai Renovates Rehab Center Sinai Hospital has received a certificate of need to ex- pand and renovate its re- habilitation medicine center. The unit currently has 30 beds. When construction be- gins, nine more beds will be added, and all of the rooms will be renovated to include bathroom facilities that are accessible by wheelchair.
