ment labels, although Lerner
belongs to the Orthodox con-
gregation. They both observe
the Sabbath and laws of kash-
ruth. They belong to a chavurah
(fellowship), which meets once a
month on Shabat.
Lerner, 43, who studied at the
Jewish. Theological Seminary in
New York from 1960 to 1964
under the guidance of the late
theologian Abraham Joshua
Heschel, cites Heschel as a
"spiritual mentor," and credits
him with providing Lerner the
inspiration to keep the prophetic
tradition alive. Lerner also holds
a doctorate in philosophy from
the University of California at
Berkeley and a doctorate in
social-clinical psychology from
The Wright Institute, also in
Berkeley.
Lerner's involvement with
leftist politics goes back more
than 20 years, with his '60s in-
volvement in the Free Speech
Movement at Berkeley and
Students for a Democratic
Society. In 1970, while teaching
at the University of Washing-
ton, he was indicted for organiz-
ing an anti-war demonstration
and was brought to trial in the
Seattle 7 conspiracy case (the
charges were eventually dropped).
Lerner also worked as an asso-
ciate editor at Ramparts
magazine from 1969 to 1972.
Last year he organized Beyt
Midrash Le Shalom, a religious
peace center that works with Oz
ye Shalom and Netivot Shalom.
Fink, 46, also active in the late
`60s anti-war movement, earned
a doctorate in social welfare at
Ohio State University and main-
tained a private therapy practice
in Dayton for 10 years before
moving to the Bay Area in 1984.
She heard about the work Lern-
er's institute was involved in,
and she began working with him
on a research project on work
and social support funded by the
National Institutes of Health.
As that research wound down
in mid-1985, Fink and Lerner
started talking about what to do
next.
"We were frustrated by the
left's lack of recognition of the
importance of psychological
dimensions in people's lives,"
Fink said.
"The progressive forces,"
Lerner added, "had crippled
themselves becaue they did not
understand the values of family
and religion. Those issues had
been taken over by the right.
Liberals and the left focused on
rights, which reinforces a kind of
individualism, which I think is
a big mistake.
"One of the reasons that the
right has gained power," he said,
"is because it has been able to
portray itself as the force that
cares about family, religion and
moral values. But those issues
rightfully belong to the liberals
and the progressives:'
"We realized," Fink continued,
"that what was needed was a
