an interview with The Jewish
News. "At the least, I want a
disclaimer. She's substituting
for (Bishop McGehee), the in-
ference is that she's speaking
for (him). She doesn't say it's
not the views of the bishop or
the diocese."
"We have all heard about
troubles in the Middle East,"
Barlow said in her commen-
tary. "What we need to do is
to recognize the causes of
these troubles ... Theo root
cause is that the Palesti-
nians, who inhabited the area
for centuries — now have no
state of their own. In 1947
when we supported the parti-
tion of Palestine, the U.S.
voted for both a Palestinian
state and an Israeli state.
Only the Israeli state came
into being, and some 3/4 mil-
lion Palestinians became ref-
ugees ... "
Barlow went on to call into
question U.S. aid for Israel
which.is used, she claimed, in
the "expansion" of the Jewish
State, the building of Jewish
settlements on "Arab lands,"
and the invasion of Lebanon
"where there had been a
quiet border for nearly a
year." She called "self-
determination for the occu-
pied territories of the West
Bank and Gaza" in "the long
term interests of Israel and
its Arab neighbors."
"There's no question what
she means to do there,"
Kushner said of the commen-
tary. "She's loaded her pre-
sentation. It's twisting his-
tory to suit her point. I don't
blame her, I blame the dio-
cese."
Kushner initially took his
complaint to Bishop McGehee
who, according to Kushner,
asked him to contact Rev.
White, consultant of the
Office of the Consultant for
the Bishop's Public Ministry.
Rev. White, in a written
reply to Kushner on July 21,
said that Barlow "is not a
person to present false infor-
mation with the intention of
deceiving, nor is she a prop-
agandist ... She was not
speaking for Bishop McGehee
(or) the Diocese of Michigan."
Rev. White suggested that
Kushner take the matter up
with Barlow, who was then
in the Middle East. Rev.
White subsequently went on
vacation as well, leaving no
one to answer Kushner's
complaint.
In a further letter to
Bishop McGehee, Kushner
wrote: "Mr. White did not see
(making a disclaimer) as
possible until he spoke with
Ms. Barlow to 'verify her
facts.' Obviously, he finds no
fault with what she had to
say, despite our refutation of
her 'facts.'
"Those in the Jewish com-
munity who have contacted
me consider it a serious
breach in honest reporting by
a religious partner in the
community."
Upon returning to Detroit,

Alvin Kushner:
"I blame the diocese."

Barlow contacted Kushner by
letter.
"If these are the positions
of my own government," she
wrote, referring to President
Ronald Reagan's call for a
settlements freeze in the ter-
ritories, "it seems to me just
as logical to ask you whose
interests you represent ...
"I happen to care about
both Arabs and Israelis," she
continued. "The occupation is
hurting both ... We need to
work together. An aroused
group of people of conscience
could make a real difference."
At press time, both Bishop
McGehee and Rev. White
were unavailable for com-
ment. Alvin Kushner recom-
mended, "If people are con-
cerned, they should let
Bishop McGehee know."

Biased Station
Is For Sale

Washington (JTA) — The
license of the Kansas radio
station which caused an up-
roar in 1982 with its racist
and anti-Semitic broadcasts
is being offered for sale.
According to the World
Jewish Congress unit on the
documentation of interna-
tional anti-Semitism, the
owner of the Dodge City
radio station, KTTL-FM, is
willing to relinquish it for
$10,000 and give up the fight
against the challenges to his
license currently before the
Federal Communications
Commission (FCC).

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Textile
exports rose during the first
seven months of 1986 from
$203 million last year to
$257 million this year, ac-
cording to Yochanan Levy,
director of the Ministry of In-
dustry and Trade's textile
and light industries division.
