But, Handleman has been and is now a member of many organizations on whose boards he has sat. Among his affiliations he counts the Jewish Welfare Federation's Allied Jewish Campaign, Jewish Federation Apart- ments, Jewish Community Council, Jewish Historical Society of Michigan, Friends of the Detroit Public Library, the development committee for the Detroit Science Cen- ter, the Founders Society of the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Detroit Historical Society. Paul Scupholm, executive director of the Friends of the Detroit Public Library, met Handleman when he filmed his documentary about the libraries. He remembered Handleman being concerned about the fate of the lib- raries. "He comes to Friends events and has a great inter- est in libraries," Scupholm said. Because of his crusades on behalf of the libraries, he was elected to the Friends board. The Washington University (St. Louis) and University of Michigan School of Business Administration grachiate ex- tends his concern for libraries to his personal life. He is a collector of first-edition books, and has more than 3,000 volumes in his Bir- mingham apartment. Avia- tion history is the largest category, and many of the books bear the autographs of their authors. He also is in- terested in general history, biography and literature, with Hemingway among his favorite authors. But what he likes to do most is fly. The owner of a vintage Navy trainer, Hand- leman has been a pilot for 15 years. "Aviation is my love affair," he reveals. Interspersed among the books are models of all types of aircraft — prop planes, jets, fighters — and pictures or artwork depicting aircraft. Pointing out a particular model, he explains at length its function and design. He flies two to three times a week, inspired by the likes of Eddie Rickenbacker and Chuck Yeager. "Those kinds of people are my heroes." A volunteer for Israel in the time of war, a civil rights worker in the midst of strug- gle, and a pilot — is there anything Philip Handleman is afraid of?" "We are most afraid of that we don't know or understand. As I get older; there isn't much to be afraid of." 111 per case $5.00 purchase- excluding diapers) Exp. 9-14-86 I WALDRAKE PHARMACY MM111•111•111•1111111111111=6•1=11111•1111 Rabbi Elimelech Silberberg at 626-1807 F ami 1 y un arma y sommasimell $2.00 • FREE DELIVERY • SENIOR CITIZEN DISCOUNT WALDRAKE PHARMACY Five 2Z STAMPS 5548 Drake Rd. WALDRAKE PHARMACY — — Stop in and CELEBRATE our 3 Justice Official Reverses Ruling Moncton, New Brunswick (JTA) — In a dramatic tur- naround, New Brunswick Attorney-General David Clark announced he would review his decision not to prosecute school teacher Mal- colm Ross of Moncton for al- legedly promoting hatred against Jews because a book by Ross that was said to be unavailable was found on local library shelves. Previously, Clark an- nounced New Brunswick would not institute charges against Ross, based on the results of a 13-month police investigation. Clark ruled that Ross could not be charged with wilfully promoting hatred against Jews under section 281.2 (2) of the criminal code because two of his books did not fall under the definition of hate literature, while the third Web of Deceit, probably did, but was "unavailable to the public," having been out of print for five years. Only a few days after the announcement, several jour- nalists in New Brunswick were able to get copies of Web of Deceit from local libraries. r i WALDRAKE PHARMACY • S UM OFF!
