"No. I got too busy and
couldn't go see the farmer."
"Nu, if you tell me where
this farmer is, maybe I could
send one of the children to
pick them up."
"No! No! He won't give the
eggs to anyone else for such a
bargain. Just for me." Then
after a moment of hesitation,
he quickly added, "I'll bring
the eggs for Mrs. Levy." And
with a crooked smile he
added: "In time for the holi-
days."
The following day, Papa
came home with the same
brown bag but a less victori-
ous smile on his face.
"The eggs for your friend. I
talked him into giving them
for the same price ... 25
cents for the dozen."
The smile and look of
gratitude on Mama's face
brought the happy look back
to Papa's. He was always
glad to please Mama — at
any cost. I wondered what
the cost to Papa was this
time.
The holidays went by
quickly. The cake eaten and
praised to the last crumb and
the incident of the bargain
eggs seemed forgotten.
