Woodward Ave. Royal 54 0a9 k., 67 M 31348 07 2 NEWS Poland Blasts Kohl's Plea For Hess Release Warsaw (JTA) — The head of Poland's Commission for the Investigation of Nazi Crimes last week sharply criticized West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl for urging that Rudolf Hess, Hitler's former deputy, be pardoned, the World Jewish Congress reported here. Kohl last month sent let- ters to the leaders of the four wartime allies — United States, Soviet Union, France and Great Britain — asking that they agree that Hess be pardoned and released from Spandau Prison where he is now the only inmate. He had been sentenced to life im- prisonment at the Nuremberg trial 40 years ago and had been captured in 1941 after mysteriously parachuting in- to Scotland. The director of Poland's In- stitute of National Remem- brance, Kazimierz Kakol, said that "if one accepted the Chancellor's view that Hess's release is an "imperative of humanitarianism" it should be noticed that it was just in the name of such "humanitarianism" that West Germany did almost everything possible not to hunt and not to call to ac- count perpetrators of genocide — war criminals— and to pardon those few who could not have avoided sentences." Deadline Set For Claims On Art Objects New York (JTA) — Dr. Israel Miller, President of the Committee for Jewish Claims on Austria, reminded surviv- ing owners or their heirs that the deadline for the filing of claims for art objects con- fiscated by the Nazis which are in Austrian government custody expires September 30, 1986. The Committee announced that claims should be filed with the Austrian Ministry of Finance, Postfach 2000 (Mauerbach), A1015 Vienna, Austria. Miller called upon former owners or their heirs to avail themselves of this op- portunity to recover some of their valuable possessions which were looted by the Nazis. The Committee for Jewish Claims on Austria represents 22 major international and national Jewish organizations throughout the world. The Claims Committee which was founded in 1952 was in- strumental in the past in securing limited payments for Jewish victims of Nazi persecution from Austria. It is headquartered at 15 East 26th Street, New York, N.Y. 10010.
