Dear Stacey,

UNIFIL Soldiers
Wounded In
Lebanese Clash

1bl Aviv (JTA) — Seventeen
French soldiers in the United
Nations Interim Force in
Lebanon (UNIFIL) were
wounded in a clash with
Amal Shiite militiamen last
week. Two Amal militiamen
were reported killed and three
were injured. It was the most
serious clash between
UNIFIL and local Lebanese
militia since the Israel
Defense Force withdrew from
Lebanon more than a year
ago. •
The immediate evaluation
of the 17 soldiers was block-
ed by the Amal fighters who
surrounded the unit and kept
it pinned down. It was several
hours before some of the
wounded soldiers were
helicoptered out of the area
while others were reported to
be receiving first aid at a
makeshift medical center set
up by UNIFIL within the
area.
The clash began when two
Amal members refused to
stop at a roadblock staffed by
the French contingent of
UNIFIL near Abasiye, some
five kilometers east of Tyre.
In a ensuing dispute during
which the French soldiers
tried to forcibly disarm the
Amal militiamen, the French
soldiers fatally shot two
Amal men. Amal militiamen
then attacked that French
contingent, wounding 17 if
them, and surrounded the
unit. The two units continued
to exchange fire for several
hours.

Newspapers
Appeal Closure

Jerusalem (JTA) — Two
East Jerusalem newspapers
appealed to the Supreme
Court to repeal an order is-
sued by the Interior Ministry
to shut them down.
In their appeal, the daily
Al Mithak and the weekly
Al Ahd, both owned by the
Khatib family, denied
charges that they were or-
gans of the Popular Front for
the Liberation of Palestine
(PFLP), which is led by Dr.
George Habash.
The brothers, in their ap-
peal, said the newspapers
were independent, although
they sometimes adopted a
line similar to that of the
PFLP or other organizations.
The papers often attacked the
PLO and the specific stand
taken by Habash, they said.
The ministery closed the
two publications by power of
1945 emergency regulations,
after warning the owners
that they faced closure be-
cause they were "operated
and directed" by the PFLP.
Th closure was condemned by
Palestinian and Israeli jour-
nalists.
