Canada Protests
Syrian Official's
Anti-Semitism
New York (JTA) — The
Canadian Ambassador to
Syria has complained to
Syrian authorities in Damas-
cus about the publication of
Syrian Defense Minister
Mustafa Tlas's antiSemitic
book which revives the myth
of the blood libel. In a letter
to the Simon Wiesenthal Cen-
ter, Joe Clark, Canadian Sec-
retary of State for External
Affairs said Ambassador
Jacques Noiseux has met the
Syrian Minister of Informa-
tion and Vice-Minister for
Foreign Affairs to convey
Canada's displeasure with the
publication, The Wiesenthal
Center said last week.
Syrian officials informed
that Tlas's book does not
represent the official view of
the Syrian government, ac-
cording to Clark's letter.
The Center sent copies of
excerpts from Tlas's book
The Matzah of Zion to the
Canadian, American, British
and French governments and
called for official protests
against this blatantly anti-
Semitic and false literature.
The Wiesenthal Center has
also sent letters to the presi-
dent of the Sorbonne Univer-
sity of Paris urging the in-
stitution to bar an upcoming
doctoral thesis by Tlas on
Soviet strategy.
In a related development,
the French daily, Le Monde
published an interview with
Tlas in which he defended
himself against the "Zionist
charges" which would prevent
him from getting his doctor-
ate and proclaimed that his
book, The Matzah of Zion, is
completely factual.

VOA Contract
Questioned'
Jerusalem (JTA) — Deputy
Attorney General Yoram
Bar-Sela — in a letter to
some cabinent ministers —
has recommended that the
contract between Israel and
the U.S. to build a Voice of
America transmitter in the
Negev should be re-
negotiated.
Bar-Sela sent the letters to
all ministers concerned with
the project saying the present
contract did not seem to
guarantee enough work to Is-
raeli companies.
