daughter, starts "relating"
with all these strangers
about her true 'relationship
with her mother and me, and
how she was repressed. Until
I groan. Then she doesn't re-
late so well, but the look I
get could kill a truck.
Finally, it finishes. We
drive back in the car. Better
it had been a hearse — more
words would have passed be-
tween us. When we pull up in
front of my house she turns
in her seat.
"So Pappa, how did you
like it?"
I can't hold back. At last I
get to talk with my daughter
who has to go to class to
learn "communication."
"Chicken soup."
"What?"
"Chicken soup."
"So what the hell does that
mean?"
This is something else they
teach in sensitivity class, so
that maybe if you need, you
can communicate with unem-
ployed longshoremen. When
she was 14, I would wash her
mouth out for language like
that. But now she learns to
relate from a yankel who
looks like Teddy Roosevelt.
What can I say?
"Chicken soup."
The engine was still run-
ning, and it was warm in the
car, and it's a long walk to
my front steps, and it will be
next week, or maybe never, I
get to see her again.
"Listen," I say, "but keep
the heater going, and I'll tell
you.
"When a man gets married,
what's one of the most impor-
tant things his bride does to
show she loves him? Forget
the bed. I should never have
let you take that sex educa-
tion course in junior high
school. Listen! The bride, the
young wife, makes him a
meal. A banquet. Special dis-
hes like his mother used to
make, but better, because the
bride t links she loves him
more. Only
she
doesn't 1-, :lve children
her
own yet. So one night, in the
first week, this young wife
puts a very special dish in
front of him. Something his
mother cooked. Chicken soup.
Now here's the difference.
In the old days, the man he
doesn't know nothing about
communication. Love and po-
liteness he understands. So
when she looks over the table
at him, just the two of them
you see, candles maybe, no
kids yet, and she asks, with
sweetness in her eyes, "Do
you like it? Is it good?" he
sips the soup. "Hmmm. Good!
I like it!" So she's happy.
"Not these schmoes now.
No! They've got to communi-
cate. Express their true feel-
ings. 'I don't like chicken
soup.'
" 'But I thought you did,'
