The two experts who used a letter-skipping method of decoding the Old Testament and other holy writings say their evidence strongly suggests that the Bible couldn't have been written by a mortal. Biblical scholar Dr. Moshe Katz and computer expert Dr. Menachem Wiener of the Technion, Israel's Institute of Technology, have conducted research based on the notion that significant words are con- cealed in the Hebrew text of the first five books of the Bible spelled by letters separated at fixed intervals. Using this ap- proach, words and concepts were uncovered that do not ap- pear explicitly in the text. Dr. Katz said that the re- searchers' evidence dispells the belief that the Bible is a collection of documents writ- ten and edited by different per- sons at different times. The patterns of letters repeated throughout all the texts dis- miss this theory, he said, be- cause the statistical probabil- ity of the patterns of informa- tion appearing at set intervals by chance is extremely low. The remarkable aspect of the research is not that words are being found in the text by str- inging together letters at reg- ular intervals, but that in every instance, the revealed words bear direct relevance to the text in which they were concealed. Another extraordinary as- pect to emerge from the re- search is the prophetic nature of many words revealed in the texts, which gives ammunition to Dr. Katz's conviction that the Old Testament and certain holy writings which came later were not written by a human hand. The doctors have only scratched the surface with their research so far. Un- explored Biblical texts are al- ready on the computer, waiting to be tackled. The scientists also plan to make this method of studying the Bible available on micro-computer to high school students. South Africa, Israel Hold Economic Talks ml Aviv (JTA) — South Africans will be allowed to continue investing in Israel up to a maximum of 40 mil- lion rands (about US 15 mil- lion) during the coming year, government sources said last Sunday. Agreement on the continuation of South Afri- can investment was reached during two days of economic talks held by Israeli officials in Pretoria. The Israeli Finance Minis- try said that the negotia- tions, which took place under a virtual news blackout by the Israeli Government, had dealt with credit lines from South African exports to Israel, fishing rights for Israeli vessels in South African waters, and invest- ments in Israel by South African citizens.
