Synagogue
Razing Hit
New York — The razing of
the 600-year-old historic
Sephardic synagogue in
Bucharest has caused "great
consternation and concern" not
only among Romanian Jews
but in the American Jewish
community, the Anti-
Defamation League of the
B'nai B'rith said.
In a letter to Nicolae Gav-
ilescu, the Romanian ambas-
sador to the U.S., Abraham H.
Foxman, ADL's associate na-
onal director and head of its
1 nternational Affairs Division,
said "as recently as three
weeks ago, we were given as-
surances and led to believe
that the synagogue would be
1 3aved."
Pointing out that American
ewish groups, played a key
ole in securing most favored
ation trade status for
:Romania and in supporting re-
newal of the status, Mr. Fox-
nan said, "In light of the de-
truction of the synagogue, we
'eel that we can no longer con-
tinue such active support."
