Women's Bicur Cholem
Organization will celebrate its
52nd anniversary at its annual
donor luncheon to be held noon
Aug. 25 at Cong. Dovid Ben
Nuchim, 14800 Lincoln, Oak
Park, announces President
Minnie Berman.
The afternoon will feature
entertainment by vocalist
Marci Shulman, accompanied
at the piano by Chana El-
binger. Mrs. Shulman is canto-
rial soloist at Temple Kol Ami
and understudy to Cantor
Harold Orbach at Temple Is-
rael.
Frances Brown is the journal
chairman and Mabel Alvin is
in charge of future leaders.
Proceeds from the donor will
go for the women's projects
benefitting the needy sick and
to Bicur Cholem Hospital in Is-
rael.
The women participate in
other projects aiding the
needy, the ailing, the retarded.
Each year, the organization
joins the Cooperative Council
in preparing a Chanukah
party and Passover Seder for
the retarded. It also partici-
pates in the Israel Emergency
Fund.
At Northville State Hospi-
tal, from which the group re-
ceived a certificate of recogni-
tion, the women built the gift
shop and Jewish chapel. At
Beaumont Hospital, the organ-
ization donated cards for
stroke patients to relearn to
read.
Other beneficiaries of the
women's efforts are the MO'OS
Chitim drive, the Juvenile
Diabetes Foundation, Chil-
dren's Hospital and the Jewish
Association for Retarded Citi-
zens.
The women's organization
has won awards for its services.
Among them are: certificates
of appreciation from Children's
Hospital and the Juvenile
Diabetes Foundation and the
leadership award from the Al-
lied Jewish Campaign-Israel
Emergency Fund.
According to Past President
Mary Bookstein, the 52nd an-
niversary celebration has spe-
cial meaning for the women's
service group. Fifty-two years
ago when the organization was
losing membership from its
senior women's organization,
its then President Miriam
Weinberg asked her daughter,
Helen Schwartz, to help re-
juvenate the group. Mrs.
Schwartz Was the founder and
honorary president of the
young women's division of
Women's Bicur Cholem.
Two years ago, Mrs. Books-
tein approached her grand-
daughter, Shari Klein, to or-
ganize young women to help
perpetuate the charitable serv-
ices provided over the past half
century by the women. A
young women's division was
again launched two years ago.
At this year's donor, the young
women's division's newly in-
stalled officers will participate.
Tickets for the luncheon are
available by calling the ticket
chairmen, Ann Shifman, 557-
7990; Jean Shifman, 557-7104;
or Shari Klein,. 967-3747.
