ment. To Sills, this shows a
lack of volunteers. We need
volunteers," she qualifies, but
good ones."
It is the easiest thing in the
world to communicate with the
retarded. But never, never, go
in with a weak heart. If there
isn't a smile on your face and a
spark in your eye, the child will
not respond to you. And don't
go in unless you're planning to
j make the child happy. Then
• the child will never forget you.
You may forget the child, but
/ the child will never forget
you."
JARC's "Volunteer of the
Year Award" was not the first
recognition of Sills' volunteer-
ing; the plaques from countless
awards hang on the walls of
her apartment: honors from
Northville, from Plymouth,
from other organizations for
the retarded. Around her neck
she wears the "Heart of Gold,"
an inscribed pendant symbolic
of her service to the city of
Northville.
"When I got the 'Heart of
Gold,' they (the children) were
all yelling to me, and of course I
had to hug this one and kiss
this one; I couldn't be with the
adults, I had to be with the
kids. I won this award where
they sat me in a red plush
chair. Afterwards the kids ran
up to me — the whole gang.
People were congratulating me
and I said, 'Wait a minute, I've
got to take care of my kids
first.' They were congratulat-
ing me and I was hugging all of
them. One of them said, "Do
you want to dance with me?'
And I said, 'Sure.' So that was
my award."
At 77, Sills does not plan to
slow her cycle of giving, teach-
ing and loving the retarded.
She is busier than ever, claim-
ing she just can't say no to
party invitations or other
JARC activities. Even at home
her activity is constant; she
writes to two pen pals and fre-
quently calls JARC residents
just "to chat," according to Kel-
ler. She dreams of writing a
book about her experiences.
With two daughters and
grandchildren of her own, Sills
only regrets not having more
children herself. "Children are
my life," she concludes.
At the corner table in Vas-
sili's, the plates are empty.
Mrs. Sills reaches into her
purse to pay the bill like she
has hundreds of times before.
The men are already eager to
go out for breakfast again, but
Mrs. Sills reminds them that
she has promised three other
homes first. "When you open
your mouth and promise some-
thing," she tells the men, "keep
your promise." Then they leave
— clumsy, noisy, beaming.
"Thank you Mrs. Sills," says
Leonard. We enjoyed it," says
Ivan.
As a volunteer, Sills does not
receive payment for service.
But she goes home with more
love. And, therefore, she be-
lieves she is rich.
"It really goes through your
heart, doesn't it?" ❑
