"What happened here, I sus-
pect, is that the Pollard case
suddenly made it kosher for the
law enforcement agencies to
come out of the woodwork and
begin pursuing some of the
cases that they felt politically
constrained not to pursue be-
fore." Lewis said.
Pollard, a civilian analyst
employed by the U.S. Navy, con-
fessed to spying for Israel. Israel
has contended that his was a
rogue operation, an isolated case
without official sanction or
knowledge.
The "nuclear diversion" re-
ferred to by Lewis was a case
that broke in 1968 when the
CIA suspected that Israeli
agents stole uranium for nuclear
weapons from a Pennsylvania
plant. Krytrons are switches
that can be used to trigger nu-
clear bombs. An American ex-
porter was indicted in 1985 for
sending 810 of them to Israel.
Israel said they were for non-
nuclear purposes.

Abram Blasts
`Some People' In
Administration

New York (JTA) — Morris
Abram, chairman of the Con-
ference of Presidents of Major
American Jewish Organizations,
charged last week that "some
people" in the Reagan Ad-
ministration, "appear determin-
ed to weaken" the "de facto
alliance that exists today be-
tween Israel and the United
States!'
Speaking at a press conference
at the Presidents Conference's
headquarters here, Abram, who
assumed the chairmanship of
the Conference July 1, said that
those elements in the "American
government bureaucracy" who
attempt to undermine the good
relations between Jerusalem and
Washington "do so by leaks, by
false charges, by manipulating
the media."
He said that those responsible
for the leaks are "lower echelon"
officials in the Justice Depart-
ment and the Customs Bureau,
a branch of the Treasury
Department.
Abram cited the recent case
when NBC:IT camera crews ac-
companied customs agents who
showed up at the warehouse in
Upstate New. York to investigate
the possible illegal acquisition
by Israel of technology for tank
cannon barrels, as an example of
the charges he made.
Abram stressed, however, a
number of times, that those who
tried to damage Israeli-Ameri-
can ties "are not high-ranking
government officials," adding, "I
believe their attempts to disrupt
the U.SIsrael relationship are
embarrassing to the Administra-
tion as they are annoying to
Israel."
