Come and let us remove your unwanted hair problem and improve your appearance.
Apparently that's not re-
quired. All you have to do is
dash in and out of the office,
make witty ripostes, and give
back of the hand answers to
ever-present flunkies and
assistants who are waiting
breathlessly for your com-
mand decisions.
Having spent just a few
years in advertising, I know
that it's not quite like that.
No, I'm not expecting cinema
verite. I don't expect a
documentary on the real world
of advertising. But it would be
D
refreshing to see the guy do a
little real work once in a
while.
Anyway, after about an
hour of this very chic, very
today kind of horseplay, we
turn our attention to Hank's
parents, played by Jackie
Gleason and Eva Marie Saint.
After 38 years of marriage,
Saint has walked out on
Gleason, Hanks must mediate.
We learn of what their family
life was, and wasn't. Mostly
wasn't, as it turns out.. Con-
flict. Emotional scenes. "You
never paid any attention to
me."
Sound familiar? It is. And
that is my biggest problem
with Nothing in Common. It
has too much in common with
too many predecessors.
The aging salesman who is
fired by the heartless new
young boss? Death of a Sales-
man? You guessed it.
The father who cheated on
his wife, never really under-
stood his son? Ditto.
The clever ad guy who
stands up to the tyrannical
client? The Man in the Grey
Flannel Suit? Yes, indeed.
The slick, hard-as-nails
beautiful woman who puts
success ahead of all else? Faye
Dunaway, in just about any
number of pictures. (Try Net-
work.)
Why go on. You get the idea.
But originality isn't every-
thing and we all enjoy a little
re-hash. (Besides not all of us
were around to see all these
earlier films.)
So there is enjoyment in
Nothing in Common. Just not
as much as promised. In the
final analysis, the main rea-
sons to see it are Hanks and
Gleason. I have to admit they
are .terrific.
