THE JEWISH NEWS
Most of the other critics
have been saying that Nothing
in Common is an absolutely
wonderful movie and that
Ruthless People is amusing,
but not that great a film.
I happen to feel just the op-
posite. Nothing in Common
(rated: PG) is a good picture,
but not a gem. Too many of its
ostensibly "sparkling facets"
have been borrowed from
other, more genuine articles.
Ruthless People (rated: R) is,
on the other hand, an abso-
lutely hilarious film. I howled
from beginning to end. Of
course, those of you who read
my occasional columns know
already that I love Danny De-
vito. He is the funniest man on
the screen today. He tries so
hard to be a villain but he just
can't actually succeed in doing
a dirty deed.
Bette Midler is another of
our very best screen per-
sonalities. The 80's version of
Mae West, she is nonetheless
unique in her own right. She is
sexy while.parodying sex. She
is bawdy While exuding an in-
nocent smile that says, "Hey,
folks, this is all in fun."
Both Devito and Midler are
at their best in Ruthless
People. The script gives them
their best opportunity in a
long time.
You probably know the plot
already. Devito hates his wife,
Midler. He plots to kill her.
But, fortuitously, she is kid-
napped. Of course, Devito con-
nives not to pay the demanded
ransom in hopes that the kid-
nappers will do away with his
unwanted spouse.
Judge Reinhold and Helen
Slatter play the kidnappers,
and they're also wonderful.
Two of the sweetest kidnap-
pers who ever lived.
Ruthless People is broad,
raucous, and loaded with out-
rageous slapstick. The pro-
ducers are the same guys who
made Airplane. If you liked
that, you'll get a load of laughs
out of this one.
Nothing in Common has
three beautiful performances
by Tom Hanks, Jackie
Gleason, and Eva Marie Saint.
And there are excellent sup-
porting characterizations by
Hector Elizondo, Bess
Armstrong, and Sela Ward.
The picture is entertaining,
but I had several problems
with it. The story seems to be

bifurcated. The first half could
be titled, "A Boy and His Job,"
the second, "A Boy and His
Dad." I won't go so far as to say
that the two halves have
"nothing in common." But I
will say that it takes this film
a long time to decide where it
really wants to go.
In the beginning, we see
Tom Hanks as a fantasized
version of an advertising crea-
tive director. His life is simply
one round of fun, fun, fun. He
makes out with an airline
stewardess, while inflight. He
plays amusing little pranks on
the secretaries in the office.
He makes a few casual re-
marks to a beautiful sophisti-
cated stranger and she in-
stantly hops into the sack with
him. He's Superadguy! Work?
