THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

One Of The Nation's Foremost Authentic Mexican Restaurants

"Like being at the finest of Mexico City"

Washington (JTA) — The

Correspondent Wolf Blitzer, who
was bumped and then un-
bumped from the press en-
tourage travelling with Vice
President George Bush, finally
received word tlast week that he
would not be welcome in Jordan.
Blitzer was to have joined the
press contingent travelling with
the Vice President in Jordan.
Bush is currently on a 10-day
three nation tour of the Middle
East, which includes stopovers
in Israel and Egypt.
Blitzer, an American citizen
and accredited White House cor-
respondent, had originally been
invited by Bush to join the press
group, only to be told at the last
moment that he would not be
welcome in Jordan.
But Blitzer then received a
call from Bush's press secretary
travelling with the entourage in
Jerusalem, Marlin Fitzwater,
telling him that "arrangements"
had been made with Jordanian
officials to allow for Blitzer's
participation in Jordanian stop
of Bush's tour. Shortly before he
was scheduled to fly to Jordan,
however, Blitzer said he receiv-
ed a call from Jerusalem Post
editor Ari Rath, who had been
informed by Craig Fuller, Bush's
Chief of Staff, informing him
that Jordan had reversed its
decision to allow him into that
country.

NEWS

Washington (JTA) — A Reagan
Administration official told Con-
gress last week that the Ruma-
nian government's bulldozing of
the 600-year-old Spanish Syna-
gogue in Bucharest July 21, or
other deplorable acts by that
government, are not reasons to
deny Rumania extension of Most-
Favored-Nation (MFN) trade
status by the United States.
Rozanne Ridgeway, Assistant
Secretary of State for European
Affairs, said the Jackson-Vanik
Amendment set emigration as
the "standard" an East European
country must meet to be granted
MFN. At present, only Rumania
and Hungary have MFN status.
Ridgeway was testifying before
the Senate Finance Committee's
subcommittee on International
Trade which is considering two
resolutions, one to permantly
deny MFN status to Rumania,
the other to deny it temporarily.
The House is also considering
two similar resolutions.
Ridgeway said that both the
U.S. and Israeli governments have
told the Rumanian government
that they expect the assurances
to Rumanian Chief Rabbi Moses
Rosen "to be honored" that two
other synagogues and a Jewish
museum would not be bulldozed
as part of a urban renewal project
in Bucharest as was the Spanish
Synagogue.
