B'nai Moshe is plan- ning its 75th anniversary. Festivities will begin Sept. 12 and will include a Torah proc- ession, congregational family Shabbat dinner and guest speaker Rabbi Yaakov-Rosen- berg from the Jewish Theolog- ical Seminary. Celebration of the anniver- sary will continue during the upcoming year, concluding in June with a synagogue rededi- cation and a gala dinner dance. B'nai Moshe was founded in Detroit in 1911 by a group of Hungarian immigrants. Orig- inally known as Cong. Beth Eliyahu, the synagogue was first located in the Hasting St. area of Detroit. In 1918 the first building was constructed at Garfield and Beaubien Streets, and the congrega- tion's name was officially changed to B'nai Moshe. In 1929 B'nai Moshe moved into a new synagogue building on Dexter Boulevard, where it remained until 1959 when it moved to its present location on Ten Mile Road in Oak Park. B'nai Israel of Petos- key will celebrate its 90th an- niversary Aug. 22 with a spe- cial Shabbat Eve service. Founded by 14 Petoskey- area residents in 1896, the Hebrew Benevolent Associa- tion — as it was then known — met in the founders' homes until the congregation pur- chased its current building in 1911. Over the years, the syna- gogue shifted from Orthodox to Reform services. B'nai Is- rael joined the Union of American Hebrew Congrega- tions in 1925, bringing the first student rabbi from the Hebrew Union College to of- ficiate in Petoskey that year. Today, congregants come to B'nai Israel from as far away as 75 miles to attend services, classes and b'nai mitzva. Poor weather conditions in north- ern Michigan prevent the con- gregation from meeting for weekly services during the winter months. `Funny Girl' Opening At Jewish Center Funny Girl, the Broadway musical comedy about Fanny Brice, will open on Sept. 13, at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield.
