A TISHA B'AV CALL TO GREATER DETROIT JEWRY

TISHA B'AV

"For Zion's sake, I will not hold my peace,
and for Jerusalem's sake, I will not rest."
Isaiah LXII

THURSDAY, AUG. 14, 1986

Nineteen hundred years after the destruction of
the Second Temple our people have lived to see
the renewal of Jewish sovereignty in the land of
Israel and have unfurled the flag of our freedom
among the independent nations.

While Tisha B'Av is an occasion to mourn the loss
of the spiritual center of the Jewish people, it is also
a time to renew our commitment to Medinat Israel
on the thirty-eight anniversary of the restoration of
Jewish independence. Jerusalem, the focus of
Jewish prayers and dreams for so many - centuries, is
once again the united center of Jewish life, hope
and creativity.

Our generation is privileged to have witnessed
and played a part in the establishment of the Third
Jewish Commonwealth. It was our parents and
grandparents who prepared the way for Israel re-
born by acquiring and redeeming the land of our
ancestors. Through the pioneering work of the
Jewish National Fund, acting on behalf of Jews
everywhere, the desolate geography of the Jewish
State is being restored to its Biblical beauty and
productivity. Empty, barren hillsides are covered
with forests, providing green sanctuaries of rest and
recreation. Malarial swamps are now fertile valleys.
Flowers, gardens and vegetables spring out of the
desert.

While we can take pride in what has been ac-
complished, much more remains to be done to
preserve and defend the Jewish homeland. This
year, more than ever before, we are asking you to
demonstrate your commitment to JNF, thus securing
Israel's growth and guaranteeing our own destiny.
Here are our goals:

• Reclaiming 75 percent of the remaining
wasteland.
• Preparing the infrastructure to populate the
north.
• .Building roads in the Galilee and connecting
these with a national highway system.
• Reclaiming 60, 000 acres in the south for ag-
riculture and establishing new jobs for im-
migrants seeking and finding new fields of
endeavor there.

Now during the Tisha B'Av season, your generous
gift will guarantee Israel's land reclamation, affores-
tation, and agriculture research programs. Let us
renew our commitment by answering the call- for
the future in the soil and soul of Israel! Please for-
ward your contributions to the JNF office or call in
your pledge without delay.
