RABBI MARC H. TANENBAUM

Special to The Jewish News

never met Milton Petrie, but
in my book he is a prime
candidate for consideration
as one of the legendary 36
righteous people who help the
world preserve its sanity. Re-
cently, New York Police Officer
Steven McDonald was shot by a
disturbed 15-year-old boy. The
bullets left the 29-year-old
policeman paralyzed from the
neck down and struggling for
survival in Bellevue Hospital's
intensive care unit. One can
only imagine the horror his pre-
gnant wife and his parents felt
over this wanton destruction.
Milton Petrie, head of a large
chain of women's retail shops
and a philanthropist, was so
moved by the plight of Officer
McDonald and his family, that
he spontaneously sent him a
check of $20,000, and pledged to
send him a similar check every
year for the rest of his life.
This is not the first time that
Petrie has practiced such bibli-
cal acts of lovingkindness. In
June, he performed a similar
deed for a fashion model, Mari
Hanson, whose face was slashed
by muggers. And Petrie has
been sharing his wealth with
many other people who have
suffered such tragedies.
On July 29, officials of the
Beth Israel Medical Center in
New York announced a $10 mil-
lion donation by Petrie which
was described as the largest
single gift in the 97-year history
of Beth Israel, a private, non-
sectarian hospital. "The Good
Lord has been good to me, and
I'm trying to return the favor,"
Petrie said.
A newspaper headline called
him a "Super-Samaritan," as in-
deed he is. But I prefer to nomi-
nate Milton Petrie as one of 36
righteous people who keeps the
world from madness. May his
tribe increase.

Mormon Center
Cannot Be
Stopped Now

Jerusalem (JTA) — A special
ministerial committee has decid-
ed that there is no way to pre-
vent the completion of the Mor-
mon Brigham Young University
Center now being built on Mt.
Scopus in Jerusalem. Israel
Radio announced the commit-
tee's decision last Sunday.
Chaired by Religions Minister
Yosef Burg of the National
Religious Party, the committee
in effect adopted the legal posi-
tions taken by Attorney General
Yosef Harsih and his deputy,
Yoram Bar-Sela, that the univer-
sity had satisfied all legal re-
quirements.
Israel Radio said the commit-
tee would submit to the univer-
sity strict conditions requiring
that the center not engage in
any missionary activities.
