SAY IT WITH TREES • Sol Ostrow Sol Ostrow, a businessman and clothier for over 37 years, died July 29, at age 88. A former Detroiter who resided in Hollywood, Fla., Mr. Ostrow was a World War I veteran. He was a charter member of Temple Israel, a member of Hannah Shloss Old-timers, and a lifetime member of the Masons. Mr. Ostrow leaves his wife, Ruth; two daughters, Mrs. Hy (Dale) Saham of Southfield and Mrs. Robert (Zita) Lafler of Mar- gate, Fla., two brothers, Herman of Calif. and Ernest of Troy; one sister, Yetta Bez of Southfield; grandchildren and great-grand- children. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the home of Hy and Dale Saham, 29410 Marimoor, Southfield. Herbert N. Schnaar Herbert N. Schnaar, founder and president Canyon Stone Corp., since 1955, died July 29 at age 61. Born in Detroit Mr. Schnaar was a manufacturer of pre-cast concrete products. We held a number of patents on cement products and manufacturing processes. In World War II, Mr. Schnaar served as an air force pilot with the rank of lieutenant and was highly decorated. He was a member of Cong. Shaarey Zedek, Men's ORT Federation, B'nai B'rith and the Variety Club. He leaves his wife, Faye Lon- don Schnaar; two sons, Dr. Daniel Schnaar and Dr. Ronald Schnaar of Columbia, Md.; a brother, Mitchell; a sister, Josephine Schlesinger of Santa Monica, Calif.; and five grand- children. He leaves his wife, Marcia; a son, Drew Nathan; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel (Elaine) Gershenson of Franklin; a sister, Sue of San Francisco, Calif; and a grandmother, Mrs. Gerald (Rose) Sandorf of Southfield. Interment in Detroit. Arthur Koppy Arthur Koppy, a land de- veloper, died July 22 at age 61. Born in Detroit, Mr. Koppy de- veloped properties in Southfield and Troy. He was a member of the Knollwood Country Club, Men's American ORT and the Birmingham Temple.He leaves his wife Joan; two daughters, Carolyn Fried and Mrs. Mark (Linda) Hodgson of Tempe, Ariz.; a son, David; his mother, Mrs. Ella Koppy; a sister, Mrs. Eleanor Abramson; and two granddaughters. Fannie Koss Fannie Koss, one of the found- ers of Bereznitzer Aid Society, died July 28 at age 92. Mrs. Koss was born in Poland and lived 75 years in Detroit. She was a charter member of Adat Shalom Synagogue, a life member of Pioneer Women and Mizrachi. Women. She leaves three children, Mrs. Ruth Elson Berkley, Bernard Koss and Mrs. D. Dan (Betty) Kahn; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Adele Nathan Robert Kranitz Robert Kranitz, 81, a former Detroiter of Akron, Ohio, died July 16. He was a past president of Keidan Lodge of B'nai B'rith in Detroit. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Mr. Kranitz was also active in B'nai B'rith and was a founder and past president of Sons of Is- rael Congregation in DuBois, Pa. He is survived by two sons, Aaron of Akron and Marc of Day- ton; a daughter, Mrs. Louis (Be- verly) Sholiton of Akron; a brother, Meyer of San Diego, Calif.; a sister, Mary of Los Angeles, .Calif.; and eight grandchildren. Interment Akron. Stephen Gershenson Stephen N. Gershenson, a Hol- lywood screenwriter, died July 23 at ag 38. Born in Detroit, a 1969 graduate of the University of Michigan, Mr. Gershenson was, for many years, general manager of Motel Management, Inc., the family business. In 1982, he left New York — Adele Gutman Nathan, an author of children's books, died July 24. She was 86. As founder of the Vagabond Players theater group, Mrs. Nathan, a Baltimore native, was advised by H. L. Mencken to pay Theodore Dreiser $15 for the rights to stage his play The Girl in the Coffin. She also met with then little-know playwright Eugene O'Neill and produced one of his plays. The subjects of Mrs. Nathan's books included Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill and the build- ing of the first transcontinental railroad. HOWARD GORDON, 78, of Southfield, died July 26. Survived by a son, Mayer; two daughters, Mrs. Inez Gordon and Mrs. Fred (Eve- lyn) Farber; father of the late Maxwell; four sisters, Mrs. Isadore (Freda) Adelson, Mrs. Esther Hahn of Calif., Mrs. Hy (Anne) Weinstein of Cote St. Luc, Quebec and Mrs. Leo (Sara) Green of Halifax, Nova Scotia; eight ,e grandchildren and the late :1:2 Craig Bektashi.
