O N1H 1. • ritettee UP FRONT hen I visited the Ufizzi gallery in Florence, I was amazed at Chris.- tian artists' fascination with mother- hood. Row followed row, aisles filled, with annunciations and pietas, multiple representa- tions of the Blessed Virgin Mary with child. Such a scene can be staggering to the non-pictorial Jewish eye. Our own Jewish museums are filled with Ibrah pointers and Kiddush cups. Jewish artists with pen in hand draw letters and texts, not fe- cund women in the act of parenting. Amid our traditional non- representations of mothers, our recent fascination with the Statue of Liberty is a curious phenomenon. Indeed, that monument is a fixture in the American Jewish imagination, occupying a place in so many family stories. The enormous im- age of a woman, bearing torch and text, looming out of New York harbor is a spectacular vi- sion by itself. As the first stable object visible to a frightened immigrant as he first enters his new home, the "Mother of Ex- iles" stands as the classic image of welcome. W Despite our empty pantheon of goddesses, Jews continue to be drawn to the Statue of Liber- ty with an enormous power, for it is in her towering shadow that modern Jewish life in America was born. Under her torch, fam- ily names were anglicized; just beyond her purview most Jews saw, for the first time, the dress and demeanor of modern secular life. The Statue of Liberty marks the crystalline moment at which Jewish time, ancient and tradi- tional, met the up-beat tempo of modernism. In literally mo- ments, an ancient civilization was transformed from a struc- tured shtetl world to which one was born, into a cosmopolitan, decentralized individualism which one chooses. The world in which, as ibvye says, "each one knows who he is and what God expects him to do" suddenly splintered into a world of denom- inations, identities, and styles. For us, the Statue of Liberty symboliies the freedom from persecution and anti-Semitism that Jews sought in their pas- sage to America. As well, she symbolizes the freedom from the past, from the power of shtetl and community, which no longer Ellen Golub is an assistant pro- fessor of English at the Universi- ty of Pennsylvania who writes regularly on Jewish and literary subjects. figured in the new lottery of per- sonal choice. One boarded the steamer as a Russian or Polish Jew, with sidecurls or sheitel. One checked into Ellis Island as the "homeless, tempest-tost," soon to be homogenized in the vast melting pot of modernism. Curiously, Jews gave voice to both Lady Liberty and the sociology of evaporating ethnic- ity. Emma Lazarus, a Sephardic Jewess, is the author of the poem that adorns the statue's base. And Israel Zangwill, in his play "The Melting Pot," postu- lated America as God's crucible, able to melt and reform all the races of Europe. For Jews more than others, a persecuted people long starved for the visual representation of a mother's love, Lady Liberty offers the symbol of worldwide welcome. In this "goldene medina," the new Diaspora chosen by our grandparents, we sit not under the fig trees and vines of our promised land. We sit ambivalently in the shadow of an imposing green mother who gives, if not the warmth of community, the promise of liberty Copyright 1986, Ellen Golub Korey Receives Bisno Award Washington — Dr. William Korey, director of international policy research for B'nai B'rith International and a leading authority on Soviet Jewry has been selected as the recipient of B'nai B'rith's Julius Bisno Award for Professional Excellence.
